Content note: This video includes images and descriptions of racial violence, destruction, theft, and generational trauma surrounding the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. It may be difficult for some to receive, but this history is knowledge for all.
Day 3 of my solo cross-country journey brought me to Greenwood—Tulsa’s historic Black Wall Street. What began as a tour became an encounter with memory, resilience, and truths that must never be forgotten.
Thank you to Kode Ransom of Greenwood Griot for carrying the history of this community with honesty, care, and conviction—and to artist Jeremy Drayton Collier, whose powerful artwork gives another language to what words alone cannot hold.
“If the house is to be set in order, one cannot begin with the present; he must begin with the past.” —John Hope Franklin
This day reminded me that travel isn’t only about seeing new places. Sometimes it means standing still long enough to witness what happened there.
