Gabriel Mervine returns to Nocturne this September.

Every Thursday night, the trumpeter brings his quartet to the stage, with Dave Devine () on guitar, Braxton Kahn () on drums and Patrick McDevitt () on bass.

A Denver fixture and one of Colorado’s most respected and sought-after trumpeters, Mervine has built a career around a sound that refuses to stand still. His trumpet can be warm and conversational, then turn bright enough to cut through a full ensemble. His musical language draws from jazz and classical traditions, but his career has carried him through salsa, big bands, funk, mariachi and everything in between.

What holds it together is the voice underneath it all: unmistakably his.

Born in Princeton, New Jersey, Mervine began his professional career at thirteen and went on to study privately with Bobby Shew, Roger Ingram and Greg Gisbert. He has since performed alongside Natalie Cole, Christian McBride, the Clayton/Hamilton Orchestra, Terence Blanchard, John Scofield, Maceo Parker, the Colorado Symphony and many others.

But his own ensembles are where that restless curiosity takes center stage. A bandleader, composer and improviser, Mervine keeps pushing the music somewhere new, listening closely enough to know when to hold the line and when to let it go.

He started playing trumpet professionally at thirteen, studied privately with Bobby Shew and Greg Gisbert, and has shared stages with names like Christian McBride, Terence Blanchard, and the Motet along the way. He's back at Nocturne in September, quartet in tow, every Thursday night in September.

Blue Note Records became legendary not just for who it recorded, but for how: founder Alfred Lion paid musicians for rehearsal time, a rarity in the industry that let artists work out difficult material before the tape rolled, giving sessions from the 1950s and 60s a tightness few labels could match. That commitment to the music was matched by an equally uncompromising visual identity, as Francis Wolff's photography and Reid Miles' stark, typographic album covers created a look as instantly recognizable as the sound itself.

The Blue Note Swing is our homage to these iconic recordings. Sip on this blueberry sour and you just might hear one of our favorite albums from Blue Note playing between sets.
