For many artists, there’s a moment where you recognize yourself as not just a student or hobbyist, but an actual artist.

For Steve Denny, that moment came when drummer Paul Romaine agreed to play a gig with him, and it was one of the first times he truly recognized himself as a musician, not just someone playing music.

Much of Steve’s growth came through collaboration and curiosity. He prioritized asking questions, paying attention and keeping an open mind.

That mindset is at the heart of his Friday night residency this month, where he explores hard-bop music that emerged from California’s jazz scene. While west coast jazz is often associated with “cool jazz” and third stream, Steve is excited to honor the deeply swinging, bebop-oriented artists and venues that shaped the sound in their own way.
