Not a dassie. Not quite a rat. The dassie rat is the only surviving member of its entire family, and it has spent a few million years perfecting one skill: flattening itself into rock cracks you’d swear were too narrow. Catch one sunbathing on the sandstone early in the morning and you’ll understand the appeal of its lifestyle.

The Cederberg does big landscapes very well. But spend a slow morning on the trails and the small things start to show up. Sunbirds working the fynbos. Rock agamas nodding at you from the boulders. Wild rooibos growing where it has always grown. Aloes holding their own in ground that would defeat most plants.

After a day on the trails, the last thing anyone wants to do is cook. So don’t.

The Old Mill House serves a home-cooked, three-course dinner with a glass of something good from the region alongside. Breakfast is the hearty kind. The walk back to your villa is short, and the stars are already out.

The Seasons in the Cederberg

A Tribute to Gladson Kaderu: The Face of Mount Ceder

Some people work at a place. Others become part of its story.

Gladson Kaderu came to Mount Ceder in September 2009 and, for many of our guests, became the face of the place. As he begins a new chapter with his family, the Vorster family and his colleagues have written a tribute to what he gave this farm.

“I’ve had the privilege of knowing Gladson for 30 years,” says Karen Vorster. “He was never just a colleague, he was a dear friend and very much the face of Mount Ceder.”
