There’s no single best time to visit the Cederberg, but there are certainly better times for some things than others. Summer is hot and dry, winter brings rain and cold nights, and then spring arrives with the flowers. Autumn sits somewhere between the two.

The Cederberg Wilderness Area is a scenically beautiful and rugged region, managed by CapeNature and forming part of the Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site. There are hiking trails, rock formations, waterfalls and mountain pools to explore, but when you visit can make quite a difference to what you’ll experience.

Wildflower season doesn’t run on a calendar. It runs on rain, temperature, and exactly where you’re standing in the Cederberg that week.

In a good season, the fynbos around Citrusdal starts turning from about mid-July into early September. Other pockets of the region flower on their own schedule entirely.

Mount Ceder sits right in the middle of it all. Routes from here lead out to the Biedouw Valley, one of the best-known flower-viewing areas around, with plenty more to find in the valleys closer to home.

Klipbokkop Villa 😍

The Groot River works its way through the valley below and you get to watch the whole thing from a deck that wraps around three sides of the house.

Klipbokkop has three bedrooms (an en-suite double, an en-suite twin, and a loft) so it works for a family or two couples who don’t want to share a bathroom queue. Big lounge fireplace for the nights it gets properly cold, an outdoor fireplace on the deck for braai season, and a dining table long enough to actually seat everyone at once.

Kareeboom Villa was made for tag-team parenting. Sleeps 8 comfortably. One family braais while the other handles the salads. Someone’s always on kid duty, which means someone else is always in the wood-fired hot tub with a view over the olive plantation.
