Em's Coffee Co. "It's way more than a great cup of coffee!" We are a small town coffee shop in the heart of Independence, Iowa.

We serve great coffee, gelato, and other fresh baked treats. We also offer a newsroom and wifi service for all of our awesome customers! Emilea Hillman is an innovative, young entrepreneur from Independence, Iowa, and the owner and operator of Em's Coffee Co. Emilea is vibrant, personable, has a strong passion for work. She is well known in Iowa for leaving a segregated workshop and becoming a bus

iness owner, when she was only 21! She takes pride in owning her own business, and she operates her coffee shop with the support of family. Emilea employs others with and without disabilities and is a valued business owner in her community. With family support, advocacy, networking and the assistance of her local WIPA, Emilea was able to open her coffee shop in a matter of 10 months. Emilea has shown the town of Independence that people with disabilities cannot only work in their community but own a business too. Emilea is also a member of Iowa’s Developmental Disability Council.

Our hearts have been heavy. Finding the right words to portray how devastated & saddened we are to have lost Joe has been difficult.. Joe was an absolute legend when it came to planting, volunteering, friendship & coffee drinking. Em loved his sense of humor & the flower boxes up front will never be the same.

We all loved having Joe in the coffee shop, he has always been a huge supporter of Em’s & a great friend to us all here. Our thoughts & prayers go out to Judy & his family during this time. 🤍
