On this Indigenous People's Day we get to learn a thing....well 2 things.
1. Columbus didn't discover sh*t!!
2. Chicago is named for the ramp!! Found in abundance along the lakefront by early Indigenous settlers, this allium became a very useful part of daily life for Cherokee, Potowatomi, Iroquois, Chippewa, Menominee & Ojibwa in the spring. One of the first available vegetables to forage in the new season for food after a long winter. It also had many medicinal uses for croup, earache, intestinal trouble and as a blood cleanser. The name stems from a French hearing of Miami- Illinois and Menominee names for the plant as "Chicagou".....correct word being "shika'ko"
