Hello all,
We are sad to share that we are ceasing all operations September 30. We are unable to renew our lease and, given the shifting dynamics of downtown business and foot traffic, it is no longer feasible to remain open.
We started with a simple mission: to bring great food and great Ethiopian coffee to people in downtown Austin. In our 9+ years of operation we have loved serving every one of you. Thank you so much for all of your support through the years—meeting all of you and creating a community centered on our service, food and drink, and mission to work with Water to Thrive has made this entire endeavor worthwhile. Thanks to you we have been able to fund two separate wells—through Water to Thrive—in Ethiopia that help provide fresh drinking water to over 1000 people. These wells will live on past the lifetime of Slake Café and continue our mission of slaking thirst.
If you take anything away from our time here please let it be this: the very definition of our name!
/slāk/ – verb: to quench or satisfy one’s hunger or thirst
