Did you know that Lady Alice Lisle who spent her last night at The Eclipse Inn before being beheaded for treason on 2 September 1685 was executed on The Square as a final humiliation?

The Square was once the bustling marketplace for Wi******er and by staging a scaffold there, the infamous Judge Jeffreys who presided over her case wanted to ensure she was made an example of to as many locals as possible.

Great to welcome a group of Plein Air painters at The Eclipse. Using our upstairs Lady Lisle room as a base, they hit the city with their easels and then came back to us for a pie and a pint.
