Sundays at The Station Inn look like this…

One of Ribblehead’s creepiest railway tales is said to have begun deep in the night at Blea Moor Signal Box.

The last train had already passed and the signalman was completely alone, miles from anywhere, surrounded by darkness, open moorland and the silence of the Dales.

Then the telephone rang.

He answered, expecting another railway worker on the line. Instead, there was no voice at all. Just slow, heavy, rasping breathing coming through the receiver.

He called out and asked who was there, but nobody answered. The breathing simply continued.

Outside, there were no footsteps, no knock at the door and no sign of another person anywhere across the moor. Just the darkness beyond the windows and that awful sound on the phone.

Some versions of the story say the signalman was so terrified he spent the rest of the night watching the door, waiting to see if whatever had been on the other end of the line would appear.

Was it a trick of the mind during a lonely night shift? Or was something else lingering out there on Blea Moor?

Whatever you believe, it’s probably not the kind of phone call you’d want to answer after dark.
