Adirondack Hotel & Colonial Arms

Built in the early 1820s, the Adirondack House was a beautiful hotel and tavern that sat on the site currently occupied by Walgreens.

In 1867 Royal C. Smith bought the property and named it the Adirondack Hotel. It burned in 1895 and was rebuilt as the prestigious New Adirondack Hotel. The dining room had a reputation locals compared to the Waldorf Astoria. In the 1880s the building also housed a bank; after one of the fires, the vault was all that remained standing.

In 1939 it was renamed The Colonial Arms. Over the years a famed horseshoe bar, indoor pool, and bowling alleys were added. It hosted names that still get repeated in town, including the Kennedy family and Marilyn Monroe. Separate fires in the 1970s took the bowling alley and pool; in 1977 the top two floors were lost.

The restaurant and bar survived that fire and ran until 1994, when the building was demolished and replaced with Rite Aid (now Walgreens). The developer reused the two original columns, some window parts, the hanging lamp, and a central gable—so a piece of the old portico is still on that corner.

The Warren House

One of Warrensburg’s earliest and most important landmarks, the Warren House began life in 1789 as Pitts Tavern — the town’s first public house — built by James Pitts on the land now occupied by New Way Lunch and the adjacent bottle redemption center.

James Warren (for whom the town of Warrensburg was named) purchased the building in 1804 and renamed it the Warren House. It quickly became known for quality accommodations, a general store, post office, and surrounding barns and outbuildings. Warren also operated a profitable potash works nearby on the current site of George Henry’s.

Warren drowned in the Hudson River in 1811 while returning from an election with his young son Nelson. His widow Melinda carried on the business for many years. The first official town meeting was held at the Warren House on April 4, 1813, shortly after the Town of Warrensburgh was established.

The original structure burned in 1888. A larger hotel designed to accommodate about fifty guests opened in 1892 and continued under the Warren House name. That second building was destroyed by fire on April 21, 1921 — widely suspected to be arson after a town-owned hose reel stored at the hotel was found deliberately slashed (and its brass nozzle damaged) the week before. The fire helped spur the organization of a formal Warrensburg Fire Company later that year.

In the decades that followed, the site gradually filled with smaller businesses, including Pete Prespare’s Taxi Service and Gas Station, Young’s 5 & 10, and eventually a Stewart’s shop in 1969.

Abandoned Car Near Grand Army House Held By Officials, Waits For Owner

WARRENSBURG -- Town Superintendent Thomas Crandall was notified yesterday that a damaged touring car with no tires on the rear wheels and out of gas and oil was blocking the road in River street between the Grand Army House and the Osborne bridge.

Mr. Crandall secured a team of horses and towed the car to the Grand Army House where it is now standing awaiting an owner.

The car is known as a Carter Car, made by the Carter Car Company, of Pontiac, Mich. It is built for five passengers and has a drab body and black running gear and trim. The left rear wheel is broken in half and neither of the two rear wheels have tires. The top is in good shape and also the engine. There were no license plates on the car.

No one in the neighborhood where the car was found could tell anything about it except that it was found lying across the roadway early yesterday morning.

It is thought that the car was stolen and broke down at the point where it was found.

In June 1949, 23-year-old model and aspiring actress Marilyn Monroe made a famous promotional stop in Warrensburg.

This visit was part of the classic Hollywood studio promotional tours of the era. In the late 1940s and 1950s, studios and magazines sent stars on personal appearance tours to small towns across America. These trips generated buzz, local newspaper coverage and goodwill while promoting films, magazines, or contests. For Monroe — then still building her career after small roles and modeling work — such trips helped humanize her as an accessible, glamorous star.

Photoplay magazine sponsored a "Dream House" contest (tied to the popular Cary Grant and Myrna Loy film Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House). The prize was a fully-furnished new home complete with appliances. Winner Virginia Bleeker McAllister chose to build it in her hometown of Warrensburg on James Street.

Monroe traveled by train from New York City with co-stars Don DeFore, Lon McCallister, and Donald Buka. They presented the keys to McAllister in a public ceremony, toured the home, posed for photos, stayed at the Colonial Arms Hotel and were rumored to have had cocktails at the Warren Inn. Town Supervisor Lee Orton presented the actors with a ceremonial key to Warrensburg.

The visit remains a cherished piece of Warrensburg history. The "Dream House" still stands on James Street, and the story has been featured in local museum exhibits celebrating famous visitors to the Adirondacks. For Monroe, it was one of many grassroots appearances that helped propel her from starlet to icon in the years leading up to her major breakthrough.

Today's archival find highlights our building’s direct connection to the dramatic 1923 collapse of the Judd Bridge.

The Judd Bridge is the oldest bridge in Warrensburg and the first to cross the Schroon River. Located just south of our friends at Warren Ford, it was originally constructed as a timber and stone toll bridge in 1820.

A replacement bridge was built in 1893, but after years of heavy commercial and industrial traffic, the structure collapsed on February 27, 1923. Local teamsters Benjamin Guiles and Walter Vernum were crossing with a load of wood when the bridge gave way. “Both men, the team of horses and the sleigh load of wood crashed down together,” reported the Glens Falls Times and Messenger.

Following the collapse, both injured horses were brought to the stables at The Grand Army House (our building!). One horse walked on its own with minor injuries, while the other was so badly hurt it had to be drawn to the stables. Dr. A.J. Pitcher, the local veterinarian, examined them and noted a possible fracture in the hind leg of the more seriously injured horse.

The Judd Bridge had been considered unsafe for several years. It was replaced with an iron bridge the following year, and eventually was replaced with a two-lane steel structure in 1996.

Interestingly, Benjamin Guiles’ son, Col. Benjamin Franklin Guiles (1921–2008), went on to become a highly decorated U.S. Air Force pilot and a respected Warrensburg community leader. He served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, later serving on the Warrensburg school board (including as president during the construction of the new junior-senior high school) and managing the Wind Song Motel with his wife Audrey.

Today's archival find takes a look at one of our favorite local stories -- Sun Canyon Ranch.

The remains of Sun Canyon Ranch in Thurman have sat untouched since 1965 when an unknown arsonist destroyed the resort.

Originally built in 1937, Sun Canyon went from rustic dude ranch to a glitzy playground for Italian organized crime families in 1962 when purchased by Cathy Carr, a pop singer best known for her 1956 hit single "Ivory Tower", and hotel magnate Ronald Cash.

In its prime, it accommodated up to 200 guests. Features included massive log structures (main lodge with lounge, dining room, kitchen, gift shop, and office; recreation lodge with swimming pool and snack bar), a large stone stable with horses, wranglers from out West, log cabins, pastures, and various activities. Guests often arrived by train or car. It hosted events like bands and dancing.

Carr and Cash abandoned the resort in 1964 due to financial problems. The resort was set ablaze twice over a four-day span in 1965. Members of the fire company said oil was spilled down the stairs and fuel-soaked mattresses were piled together as an accelerant.

While we may be closed on vacation, our research into the town and building history never ends!

"DROPPED DEAD"

Yes, this was an actual article in a newspaper -- The Essex County Republican back in 1907.

They even got his name wrong – it was Hugo Vonschultes.

With a little digging, we discovered Mr. Vonschultes passed suddenly at 9:30 a.m. on March 21 after a five-year battle with heart disease. Vonschultes had been running the Grand Army Hotel for just five weeks after arriving from Saratoga, hoping for a quieter, healthier life.

And by the way, in 1907 for the bargain price of just $1.50 a year you could get all this straight-to-the-point news from the Essex County Republican delivered straight to your door!

Here's what else you could get for $1.50 in 1907:

Groceries: Approximately 10 loaves of bread, 12 pounds of sugar, or around 15 quarts of milk.

Clothing & Goods: A pair of men's sturdy work boots, 3 men's dress shirts, or roughly 15 yards of cotton fabric.

Entertainment: Up to 15 admissions to a local nickelodeon, or about 30 streetcar (trolley) rides.

Now that we've finished our patio we are considering building a nickelodeon!
