A curious encounter with chai at Mumbai airport.

A regular at our Rochester tea house often asks us for kadak chai. It's not on our menu, but we make him a stronger, longer-boiled version of our chai. Because the word kadak means strong in India.

So when I came across this sign for kadak chai at Mumbai airport, I naturally thought of him. And also felt that the time had come to really understand what it was all about.

Turns out, kadak chai had a remarkable journey — from India's chai traditions to the Arabian Gulf, where kadak became a beloved part of everyday life, and then back again.

And just around the corner was another sign advertising Mumbai's famous cutting chai.

Different names, different traditions, and a shared love of a strong cup of tea.

Nancy Kraus has considered herself an artist since she was six, when her parents sent her to classes at the Memorial Art Gallery and she painted surrounded by paintings. She became a teacher and a children's librarian, but the art never stopped: illustration, silk painting, and now felting.

She calls the process comforting and meditative. Weeks of small punches with a needle, one color at a time, until the wool remembers the feeling of an old wall in France or a hillside in Costa Rica. It's slow work. It rewards slow looking.

Her felted pieces go up this Friday for First Friday — October 2, 6 to 9 PM. Nancy will be here to talk about the work, and every piece is for sale. Full tea service and tea-based mocktails all evening.

There's a moment in Nancy Kraus's bio where a whole medium fails her. She'd come home from Southern France with photographs of buildings hundreds of years old, all nubby wood and worn stone, and tried to turn them into silk paintings. It just didn't work. The images were flat. The places weren't.

So she picked up a felting needle, and she hasn't put it down since.

Nancy has been coming into the shop for a long time. It was only recently that we learned she makes art with wool — first wet-felting a background mat by rolling, squeezing, and pounding dyed fleece with soap and water, then drawing on top of it with a barbed needle, punching color into the surface layer by layer over many weeks. The results have the texture of the places that inspired them: France, Japan, Costa Rica.

Her work goes up on our walls for First Friday, October 2, from 6 to 9 PM. Full tea service all evening, plus tea-based mocktails.

Excited to have welcomed Jessica Creane from ! She’s behind the production, Tea Party at the End of World, featured at the current . Our curiosity piqued, we secured tickets for the Sunday performance. The promotional material entices with the promise of delightful tea and parlor games inspired by her experiences in the Arctic Circle. We enjoyed a lively discussion about tea and her adventures in that region, which we had recently visited! However, we chose not to inquire about the details of the show, as we didn’t want to ruin the mystery. The event has already sold out for several days, so act quickly to grab any remaining tickets!

After the dinner is done and the dishes are washed, now is the time to relax and enjoy some quiet time. This set of herbal teas has been curated for those quiet hours in preparation of restful and restorative sleep.

Thank you for coming out last night for our second First Friday event. It was a joy to have Paul DiStefano show his artwork in our space. There is so much talent for beauty in our town. We are inspired, and we hope you are too by his work. They will be on display for the rest of the month. So if visit our tea house, don’t forget to take a look.
