We're doing something a little different this Friday.
After hours, we're opening up the shop for a laid-back evening — and there's quite a bit to look forward to.
Happy Gut Sanctuary will be pouring their artisan kombucha, much of it brewed with our own organic loose-leaf teas. Our tea mocktails are making a return for the night — seasonal, bright, and completely alcohol-free, they're one of those things people keep asking us to bring back. And DJ Maxxie, who's been part of this community for a while, will be providing the soundtrack.

🌧️ New teas are raining down at Happy Earth Tea!

This week we’ve welcomed two fresh Darjeeling First Flush teas from Steinthal and Jungpana.

Then, in a surprise twist, a shipment of Chinese teas that had been trapped in Customs for over two months suddenly appeared at our door yesterday. We thought it was lost for good!

The box is packed with exciting new arrivals, including several outstanding black teas. More details coming soon. 🍵✨

A note to our Happy Earth Tea community —
We want to be upfront about something. Several of you have reached out about the ziplock on our new compostable pouches pulling away from the bag wall. It's a real defect, and we're sorry it's happening.
Here's where things stand: we've spoken with our supplier, and they are working with the manufacturer to get to the bottom of it. We don't have a resolution yet, but we're pushing.
While we wait — try this. Fold the top of the bag over a couple of times and seal it with a paper clip. Simple, but it keeps your tea fresh.
We're not switching back to conventional plastic. The environmental cost of that decision is one we're not willing to make, even when things get complicated.
Also worth knowing: these bags are compostable, but they need a commercial composting facility — not your home bin. Rochester is lucky to have for exactly this. They handle composting for us at the shop and at home.
Thank you for your patience and for holding us to a high standard. It means everything.

What a beautiful afternoon at Happy Earth Tea. 🍵
Today we hosted our Art of Matcha class, led by the wonderful Rie Maywar — a Japanese matcha expert who brought so much warmth, knowledge, and joy to the room. Guests learned how to whisk a proper bowl of matcha, explored the history and ritual behind it, and walked away with a much deeper appreciation for this ancient practice.
These classes are always a reminder of why we do what we do — creating space for people to slow down, connect, and discover something new.

Today is International Tea Day, and the themes the FAO has chosen for 2026 feel especially close to home: Fostering Growth and Inclusion. Sustaining Tea, Supporting Communities. Tea for Wellness.
The photograph is from Jun Chiyabari, our partner tea garden in the hills of eastern Nepal. The people in the frame are the ones who make the tea you sip possible — pluckers, sorters, processors — whose hands have shaped every leaf that eventually finds its way into our compostable pouches here in Rochester.
It's easy, half a world away, to think of tea as a product. A flavor. A morning ritual. But every cup begins on a hillside like this one, with someone deciding which leaves to pick and which to leave for tomorrow.
The FAO's themes matter because growth and inclusion mean little if the people closest to the plant aren't part of the conversation. Sustaining tea means sustaining the soil, the climate, and the families whose livelihoods depend on the harvest. And wellness only holds up if it extends from the cup all the way back to the garden.
Fifteen years in, we're still learning. But today feels like a good day to pause, look at this photograph, and say thank you — to the growers in Darjeeling and beyond, and to you, for choosing tea that tries to do right by all of them.

Some people just have a gift for making a room feel lighter. Jim is one of them.
Always laughing — even on the days when the store is slammed and the line is out the door. He has a way of chatting up every customer, whether they've been coming in for years or just wandered in for the first time, like they're an old friend he's been waiting to see. Off the clock, he's a devoted dad and husband.
Today is his birthday, and we couldn't let it pass without saying how grateful we are to have him on our team.
If you see Jim in the shop this week, be sure to wish him a happy one.

Some of you have been asking about our house blend matcha for over a year. Today, we finally have an answer.
Japan's matcha shortage — driven by a global surge in demand that outpaced what the tea fields could produce — kept our house blend off the shelves since late 2024. We watched the wait list grow, even as we begged and pleaded with our partner. We held out for the source we trust rather than substituting with something we didn't.
Yesterday the boxes finally arrived. Jane opened the first tin, prepared a bowl the traditional way, and confirmed what we were hoping. It was absolutely worth the wait!
