2019 Emidio Pepe Trebbiano d’ Abruzzo
Emidio Pepe, who passed away on July 28, 2026, at the age of 94, was one of the great visionaries of Italian w**e. Born in 1932 into a farming family in Torano Nuovo, Abruzzo, he inherited a tradition of w**emaking that stretched back to 1899. In 1964, he founded his namesake estate and began bottling his own w**es at a time when Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo were largely viewed as simple, everyday w**es. Pepe saw something others didn’t: the potential for these native grapes to produce profound, age-worthy w**es that could stand alongside Italy’s greatest. For more than 60 harvests, he remained fiercely committed to farming with nature, traditional methods, indigenous fermentation, and extraordinarily long aging. His w**es ultimately transformed the perception of Abruzzo on the world stage and proved that Montepulciano and Trebbiano could possess remarkable depth and longevity. Today, his daughters and granddaughters continue the estate, carrying forward a philosophy that was never about following trends, but about patience, place, and an unwavering belief in his land. Emidio Pepe leaves behind a legacy that fundamentally changed how Abruzzo, and Italian w**e, could be understood
