Aerification is the process of punching small holes into golf course turf—especially greens—to relieve soil compaction, improve drainage, reduce thatch, and help roots access air, water, and nutrients. It typically involves core aeration (removing plugs) or solid‑tine aeration (creating holes without removing soil), both essential for maintaining firm, smooth, and healthy playing surfaces.
What Aerification Does
Relieves soil compaction: Foot traffic, mowing, and rolling compress the soil, reducing pore space. Aerification opens channels for air and water.

Improves drainage: Sand-filled aeration holes help water move downward, reducing soggy greens.

Reduces thatch: Removing plugs breaks up the organic layer that can trap water and cause disease.

Promotes deeper roots: Better oxygen and nutrient flow encourages stronger turf that withstands heat and drought.

Enhances gas exchange: Holes vent CO₂ and allow fresh oxygen into the root zone.

6th Annual Richardson Family Veterans' Support Golf Tournament at Poland Spring Golf Course.

- This tournament directly supports the Travis Mills Foundation, dedicated to helping recalibrated veterans and their families thrive.

Event Details
- Format: Four-player scramble
- Check-in: 8:00 AM (please arrive by this time)
- Sh***un Start: 9:00 AM EST
- Cost: $600 per team ($150 per player) – includes green fee, cart, and post-tournament meal
- Singles Welcome: No team? No problem. We'll pair you up on tournament day.
