We are a family and employee owned and operated coffee company. Our flagship store is located in Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District. We roast all of our coffee in-house and serve simple, yet elegant café food, craft cocktails, local b**r and natural wines. Our team and customers are some of the nicest, hardest-working people around. We love our jobs, our city, and believe that cafés should play a role in creating, enriching and sustaining happy communities.

Kinini Village returns as one of our favorite coffees to offer as the weather gets cooler—and this year’s crop is shaping up to be a real standout. Cozy and comforting with notes of buttery hazelnut and sweet maple syrup—yet easy drinking with a light body. Citrus acidity, like blood orange, blossoms as the coffee cools, bringing balance to the cup for this iconic light/medium roast coffee from Rwanda.

Especially noteworthy for this coffee is the mouthfeel. That hazelnut note is further pronounced by this coffee’s slick, coating, and buttery mouthfeel that truly enhances the drinking experience.

We’re excited to share our partnership with Life's Work , an organization that helps create employment opportunities for adults with disabilities by connecting them with companies where they can contribute their skills, learn new experiences, and be part of a team.

Life's Work brings a team with enthusiasm, a great attitude, and a real desire to help. They've jumped into different production tasks, and their support has been incredibly valuable. Any of our coffee bags purchased by our customers and wholesale partners have been labeled with love by Life's Work members and has supported not only us but their mission as well.

This was made possible by our former employee and longtime friend, Ned Yarsky (Ned Yarsky pictured in the first and last photos). A few years ago, Ned was a rockstar in the kitchen, shifted careers and now works with Life’s Work. He thought we would be a great fit to work together, and he was absolutely right. We’re grateful he made the connection.

Our goal is to continue building this relationship and create opportunities for their team to spend time with us, contribute to meaningful projects, and support our production operations.

Life’s Work has been wonderful to work with, supportive, kind, and genuinely excited to be part of what we do. We’re looking forward to continuing this partnership and seeing where it takes us!

We’ve been close friends and partners with the Tío Conejo team for the past few years. On August 10th, a major earthquake caused significant damage in the region, including at their farm. They’re now working to recover and rebuild, and we wanted to find a way to support them directly. By purchasing this coffee now, we’re helping get cash directly to the farm that they can use toward the damages and recovery. It’s a simple way for us to support our friends while also sharing a coffee we really love.

We want to offer a HUGE congratulations to our own head roaster Stephanie, her husband Paulo, and our good friends (and partners) Andrew and Dylan for officially bringing a dream of their to life and launching a green-coffee import business - Dynamic Green Coffee.

Together, they will leverage their deep connections in their own “countries of origin” - Guatemala and Honduras - to bring incredible coffee from great people (including their own families and friends)—to the roasters in the US.

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already enjoyed some of their exceptional coffees at De Fer or at other local roasters. By forming their own company and partnership, we all get one step closer to the source - and that level of transparency and direct-to-farm relationship is something we will all benefit from.

As for De Fer, we’ve never been closer to origin or had a stronger link directly to the people who produce coffee. We look forward to welcoming more and more of these exceptional coffees from these exceptional origins and people to our cafe in the future.
