Moxie’s turning five and it’s time to party!

On Saturday, May 9 from 8am-1pm…

We’re celebrating with a Parking Lot Party in our garage just outside our front doors. We’ll have over 30 vendors (food, wine, art, jewelry, vintage, and more…) and a live DJ.

We’ve also recently unveiled our new bakery and we’ll be showcasing some of our newer pieces. It’s a perfect way to kick off Mother’s Day weekend!

Not sure where to start, but here’s some of our highlights (sorry if we’re leaving some things out, there’s too much to recount)!

Our Production Manager Kayla and General Manager Levi just returned from Guatemala where they spent 5 days alongside our producing partners at CODECH in Huehuetenango. We’ve worked with CODECH since opening Moxie in 2021… They’re a true model of consistency and quality in the coffee industry.

Each year, a few roasters make the trip and hold an annual competition in which the members of the co-op submit coffees to be scored. Based on the results, top scoring coffees are awarded both with recognition in their community at an awards ceremony and also with an extra premium on their coffee.

Both Kayla and Levi have been such reliable and key pieces at Moxie for many years. They’re leaders at Moxie and in the industry, but more importantly they’re genuinely great people that our team loves to work alongside every day. It was awesome for them to connect with our longest standing producing partners, see their processes, taste the current harvest, and get a little time away.

Join us for our FIRST EVER Producer Series event, this Saturday, February 28 from 4-6:30pm… Tickets on sale now at the link in our bio! (Industry folks, see the note at the bottom of this post)

From the COE award winning Cordero & Solis farm in Costa Rica, we’re releasing a Washed Geisha and a Red Honey Catuai (2025 Experimental COE winner). To celebrate, we’re hosting the first of our Producer Series, a live experience where we’ll showcase these two incredible coffees and open a dialogue about what makes them unique.

At the core of what we do at Moxie is try to highlight the work of producers that are changing the landscape of specialty coffee through quality and experimentation. We’re pumped to share this with you!

We’ll be joined LIVE on video by our friends at Cordero & Solis. You’ll have the unique opportunity to hear from the producers about their journey to producing world-class coffees and take part in a Q&A session about farming practices, processing methods, and more.

Your ticket includes:

- A guided tasting of both coffees
- Educational session about coffee processing methods
- LIVE interview with Q&A from the producers
- Light bites & wine pairing to finish the evening

This producer series is designed for both beginners and industry experts alike. If you’re new to coffee don’t be shy. If you’re in the industry, this will be a great opportunity to further your knowledge in coffee varieties and processing methods.

- Packaging & shipping coffees
- Delivering whole bean and cold brew throughout the Phoenix Valley 2x per week
- Hours are Mon-Fri 8am-4pm (slightly flexible if need be)

We’re open normal hours Friday… Any government agency (ICE) deploying tactics like this should be called what it is: evil and disgusting. There’s no excuse.

Our team is filled with amazing people with big hearts and a deep passion for their work. For the last 5 years, we’ve tried to make Moxie a warm, welcoming space for people of all walks of life.

We believe we have an important role to play, not just in making good s**t, but also in creating a space where people feel safe.

‼️Our Permit Is Approved ‼️

We’ve been working behind the scenes for months to get our permits for our bakery, and we’ve finally made it. We’re hoping to get things rolling here in the next couple months (only 6 months behind schedule, but hey… better late then never). 🙃

The craziness of November has let up a little and our shop is back to regular Moxie vibes. Still busy, but the total chaos has chilled a bit We’re looking for bakers and baristas to help us enter this next chapter of Moxie opening a bakery and transforming our shop from just a coffee shop to a coffee shop and bakery.

A few things:

1. The first thing we look for are great people. People who buy in, operate quickly and efficiently but with a sense of presence and hospitality.
2. We’re looking for specialty coffee/bakery pros. We want people who really care about the raw product and who approach every day looking to improve their skills and contribute to the team anyway they can.
3. Ideally you’ll have some experience, but for someone who’s hungry and motivated enough, we’re happy to train you from the ground up. Really, it’s more about attitude than skills, but skills certainly help get you to the front of the line.

This will certainly be the most exciting season in Moxie’s 5 years. We’ve spent much of the first few years honing our systems, making sure what we’re doing is sustainable, and we’re ready to welcome some new crew to the mix to help us grow and expand our program.

We’re hiring again!

Things have picked up lately and our shop has become REALLY busy. And while we’re definitely holding the fort down, we’re looking for our next crew member to help us in this next season of growth as we’re increasingly busy and our bakery is preparing to launch.

A few things:

- Ideally you’ll have specialty coffee experience of some sort. We’re so busy right now we won’t have much extra time for ground up training.
- We’re seeking a balance of someone who’s kind, warm, and can slow down the experience for guests and make it meaningful… but at the same time, can operate with a sense of urgency.
- Culture is #1 for us. We operate as one unit, take care of each other, help as needed, and do what it takes to get the job done.

For example, our two bakers who’d never worked behind our bar were called on to help cover for a sick team member on our busiest day in the Moxie’s history. With no training and 20 mins notice, they dropped whatever they had going and were willing to do whatever it took.

Our next season will be busy, controlled chaos. We’ve spent 5 years honing our systems and we believe we’re executing high quality specialty coffee at a scale that’s not very common. And we have an amazing team that’s only continued to get better over the years.

A couple years ago, we were lucky enough to receive an application from Ana Paula, originally from Ecuador and now here with her family in Phoenix. Not only is she an amazing team member, but she also brings a unique connection broadly to coffee production, and more specifically, to Ecuador 🇪🇨

On her recent trip back to visit, Levi and Brent joined her and they made a coffee sourcing trip out of it. A 6 day adventure through some pretty wild conditions, tasting some of the finest coffees Ecuador has to offer and learning a lot about what goes on behind the scenes. They even got to visit Fabricio at Hacienda La Florida, one of our favorite partners.

The glimpse into the world of coffee producers fundamentally changes how we view this beverage we love. In the coming months and years, we’re making it a big priority to bring you further into this world by reducing the gap between producer and consumer. We’re hoping to do this with more events, having producers join us on zoom or in person, and allowing you to really get to know our coffee producing partners in a new way.

What we do as a roaster is make our best attempt to showcase the work done at origin. While we definitely implement extraordinary standards for roasting, cupping, and quality control… the real magic is happening mostly behind the scenes by people we largely don’t ever get to meet.

We’re hoping to change that a bit… Stay tuned.

We met .t in Houston this past April at the SCA Expo, and after tasting a few of his coffees, we bought as much as we could. This particular washed coffee is stunning. Bursting with layers of tropical and stone fruits and a clean, smooth mouthfeel. It jumped off the table to us the first time we tasted it, and it’s only got better over the last month or so. We’ve got it available in bags and pour over bar only for about 1-2 more weeks. Snag it while ya can!

PRIVATE TASTING & ROASTERY TOUR

For the first time ever, we’re hosting a private tasting and tour of our new roastery in Downtown Phoenix! Limited to 25 guests, here’s the low down:

A ticket includes a tour of our new roastery, a cupping of our award winning Letty Bermudez, and we’ll have a few brews of Letty to share amongst attendees too.

Along with the tasting, our owner and head roaster Matt will unpack the roasting philosophy that makes Moxie unique. He’ll also touch on the state of coffee fermentation and processing, and how innovation at the farm level is helping producers offset uncertain climate and economic headwinds. There will be lots of interesting info, but don’t worry, we’ll keep it concise and simple. You’ll even get to see a full roast, start to finish while we talk through every detail as we go.

The event will be approximately 1.5 - 2 hours long. To keep the event intimate, attendance is capped at 25 people. Q&A as we go through the tour and at the end. Bring all your questions!

This is the first event we’ve ever done like this. We absolutely love Letty, and we want to take every opportunity to showcase a truly remarkable coffee. But more than that, it’s an attempt to more closely connect with the community in Phoenix and help us all be more connected to the coffee producers around the world.
