October is Filipino American History Month, and we’re celebrating ~ again ~ with spirits and mythical creatures woven into Filipino culture and history.
Long before colonization, communities across the Philippine archipelago had their own rich traditions of storytelling, spiritual beliefs, and folklore. These stories helped people make sense of the natural world, explain the mysteries of life, and pass down lessons, values, and warnings from one generation to the next.
Today, these stories remain an important connection to our roots. They remind us that Filipino culture is imaginative and complex. Folklore is a living tradition, and sharing it helps keep these stories alive for the next generation.

Inspired by the legendary Bakunawa, a serpentlike dragon in some Philippine creation stories said to swallow the moon and cause eclipses.

Inspired by the batibat, a spirit associated with trees and the terrifying bangungot, or nightmare related sleep phenomenon, in Filipino folklore.

Inspired by the enchanting sirena, or mermaid of Philippine folklore, whose beauty and mysterious songs are said to lure people towards the sea.
