Fun facts from Columbia, PA as they continue their 300th anniversary celebration. We can wait to visit on Tuesday morning, June 23, 2026, as we prepare to celebrate our 250th during the Lincoln Highway Association National Conference. We certainly hope nothing this "exciting" happens.

🐮🐮🐮🐮🐮 Watch for flying cattle as you travel.

On this day in 1929, Union Street resident John Forney stomps on the gas in an attempt to pass several cars on the Lincoln Highway on his way west toward Mountville...but is unable to complete the move before a cattle truck heading east comes barreling toward him. Both vehicles swerve suddenly to avoid a head-on collision. The truck drives off the road and overturns, spilling its cargo. Traffic is stopped while the animals are rounded up, with all but a small calf avoiding serious injury.

We're taking a trip down memory lane during some presentations at the Lincoln Highway Association National Conference.

Preservation Pennsylvania executive director, Mindy Gulden Crawford, will introduce the showing of the 2008 PBS documentary, A Ride Along the Lincoln Highway, on Monday, June 22, 2026 and then share some behind the scenes stories after the screening.

Then on Tuesday, June 23rd, she'll be our tour guide on the Chambersburg bus and then again on Thursday, June 25th on the Wrightville bus. She used to scoop ice cream at The Haines Shoe House so she'll be able to gives us the scoop on the Shoe House history too.

Finally, here's a video she narrated in 2013 for the centennial of the Lincoln Highway featuring York County's Lincoln Highway history. We are so thankful that Mindy is with us this year from start to finish for our 250th Road to Independence celebration. Did we mention she still serves as volunteer treasurer for the PA Chapter LHA. We couldn't do it without you.

This was the last remaining wooden covered bridge that stood along the Lincoln Highway coast to coast. It was located at Juniata Crossings and stood until the 1936 St. Patrick Day floods devestated the region. According to this vintage postcard, George Washington used this covered bridge.

You'll have an opportunity to see covered bridged still standing during your travels to the Lincoln Highway Association National Conference, but you'll need to take some short detours off US 30 and even the Lincoln Highway orginal route if you want to visit a covered bridge. The evolution of bridge construction happened rapidly in the early 20th century to modernize the dirt wagon roads and make the bridges capable of carrying heavier vehicles.
