Some things on the farm are planned. The cheese schedule, the brew days, the dinner series, the garden. And then there are the moments that remind you that the farm has a say too.
Monday morning we discovered that one of our laying hens had been keeping a very big secret. Somewhere, tucked quietly out of sight, she had been collecting eggs — twelve of them — and for the past 21 days she had been sitting on them, completely undetected, doing exactly what nature intended. We had no idea. She never once let on.
And then on Monday, she simply marched out and introduced us to her family. Twelve tiny chicks, single file behind mama, taking in the world for the very first time. She was so matter of fact about it — head high, chest out, as if to say, look what I just did — and went right back to the business of teaching them everything she knows.
Now several times a day, whether we're heading over to visit the goats, or carrying feed to the pigs, there they are. All twelve of them, trailing behind her in a little parade, learning her ways. Every single time we stop and smile. We can't help it.
Did we need twelve new chicks? Honestly, probably not. If history is any guide, about half will turn out to be roosters — and roosters we absolutely do not need. But that smile we get several times a day, that little pause in the middle of a busy farm day? That is exactly what makes this life so special. You can't plan for it. You can't manufacture it. It just shows up one Monday morning, twelve chicks strong, and reminds you why you chose this in the first place.
We hope your week has a moment like that too.
Hope to see you on the farm,
Joy
