I moved to Boulder for college and discovered house music β€” which in the late '90s was still very much underground.

Then some friends and I pooled our money and bought a pair of Technics 1200s turntables.

I still have those turntables. I use them at every single wedding I DJ.

We got a residency at a place called The Barrel House β€” RIP β€” and I was having the time of my life. Playing what I loved. On my terms.

I also had very firm rules about what I would and would not play.
That becomes important in the next part.

First Skate Jam of 2026 in the books, and it was a hoot! It poured rain for about 45 minutes when we were supposed to be setting up, but in true Colorado fashion, it cleared, and the Sun came back out to dry everything out.

DJ Dave kicked things off with some old school hip hop vibes with some other gems mixed in.

Then changed the mood and got the crowd moving. My neighbor's daughter loved how they screamed and jumped around at parts but then also reminded the crowd that there was ice cream from !

Next one is June 26th with ! Don't miss it!

Growing up in Reno in the '90s, I found the underground punk and hardcore scene at about 15 years old.

And it completely rewired my brain.

What punk gave me wasn't permission to reject the mainstream β€” it was proof that the music world is enormous. That incredible stuff exists in basements, small venues, and independent labels. You just have to be willing to go find it.

I still believe that. That hasn't changed.

What it also gave me was a framework built almost entirely around depth and discovery. If something was popular, it wasn't automatically bad. But it also wasn't automatically interesting to me.

That instinct served me really well as a music fan. As a DJ, it turned out to be more complicated.

I sent my wife a Justin Bieber Coachella reel and asked if I was becoming a Bieber fan.

She said yes.

If you told 16-year-old me β€” the kid sneaking into punk shows in Reno who thought anything on the radio was basically a corporate conspiracy β€” he'd have walked away from you.

But here we are. And honestly, the journey from that kid to where I am now is actually a story about becoming a better DJ.

Six parts. Starting from the beginning. Follow along.
