How do you sum up more than 40 years at St. Elmo?

Recently we celebrated the retirement of the one and only Kerry ("with a K"), one of the most familiar and beloved faces in the St. Elmo family.

When Kerry began his career at St. Elmo, Indianapolis looked a little different. He watched the Colts arrive in Indianapolis in 1984 and eventually move from the Hoosier Dome to Lucas Oil Stadium. He was here as Indianapolis grew into one of the country's great sports and hosting cities. He experienced nine NCAA Men's Final Fours hosted in Indianapolis, including the unprecedented 2021 tournament when the city and state hosted the entirety of March Madness.

He was here when Reggie Miller and the Pacers made their historic run to the NBA Finals in 2000. And, of course, he was here in 2012 when Indianapolis hosted its first Super Bowl, just a few blocks away from our building.

But while Indianapolis was changing outside our doors, plenty was changing inside them, too.

Kerry was part of St. Elmo as Steve Huse purchased the restaurant from Harry Roth and Izzy Rosen in 1986 and, alongside Craig Huse, began a new era for our restaurant, and eventual hospitality group.

He watched St. Elmo grow through renovations and expansions, eventually stretching into multiple dining spaces beyond the original restaurant. He saw Harry & Izzy's open next door in 2007, carrying forward the names and legacy of Harry Roth and Izzy Rosen, and in 2011, he watched the second floor transform into 1933 Lounge, adding an entirely new chapter to the St. Elmo story.

Through all of that change, we could always count on Kerry (usually with a glass of bourbon, and possibly an inappropriate joke).

Cheers to Kerry for for every shift, every laugh, every friendship and every memory he's given St. Elmo over the years. There are generations of stewards and guests who are better for having known him, and we're incredibly grateful that so much of his story is intertwined with ours.

Enjoy retirement, Kerry, you've certainly earned it! We know we'll see you around, and we wouldn't want it any other way.

What an incredible evening at St. Elmo Steak House.

We were honored to celebrate the Indianapolis debut of Winston A. Fox: The Story of Six Fine Ryes with an unforgettable wh***ey dinner alongside our longtime partners at Journeyman Distillery.

Guests enjoyed a collaborative multi-course menu crafted by Executive Chef Matt Wahl and Executive Chef Guy Meikle, thoughtfully paired with selections from Rare Saint Whiskeys and Journeyman Distillery. From exceptional food and handcrafted spirits to great conversation and shared hospitality, the evening was a true celebration of wh***ey craftsmanship and partnership.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this special night one to remember! Cheers to many more years of boozy collaborations.

As America celebrates 250 years of independence this weekend, we find ourselves reflecting on our own small place in that story. St. Elmo Steak House is nearly half as old as the country itself, and over the course of almost 125 years, these walls have witnessed pandemics, world wars, changing generations, and countless gatherings around our tables.

America has changed in extraordinary ways since Joe Stahr first opened his tavern in Downtown Indianapolis. And yet, some things have stayed remarkably familiar. Yes, if you look closely, you’ll see shrimp cocktail on the menu all those years ago, for just 10 cents. Some traditions were clearly built to last.

One thing we have always understood about St. Elmo is that this place existed long before any of us were even born, and our highest responsibility is to ensure it endures long after us. We are proud caretakers of this institution, and there is both pride and humility in carrying that legacy forward.

Cheers to 250 years, America! Here’s to the stories behind us, the tables still to be set, and the traditions worth preserving!

You've heard of breakfast of champions, but what about dinner of legends? Every year after each Huse Culinary location celebrates their years of service of stewards hitting their milestone work anniversaries of 5, 10 or 15 years, St. Elmo Steak House hosts an iconic dinner for any steward that has hit 20 years of service or more. This year, we were ecstatic to introduce four more stewards to the 20 Year Club.
