I took this picture in 2020, a lot has changed in 6 years!!!
As you may know, Food Riot is no longer a restaurant. This year we officially became a non profit/public charity!! We partnered up with our amazing neighbors at St. Joeโ€™s Plaza, AMEN Food Pantry and Church at Dickinson, to provide two hot meals per week in addition to our newest goal of keeping a stocked indoor FREE TO EVERYONE community pantry, that we have named Nanaโ€™s Pantry after my own very sweet mom, Nana Sue. ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’•
We have been so blessed to have so many helpers from the community make this happen. For 6 months now, a little word of mouth and a lot of prayer has brought us just enough donations and volunteers to never miss a day of scheduled hot food service.
With that said, we grew really fast after adding the nutritious and delicious salad bar to our nightly menu, and we are finding ourselves needing to ramp up our fundraising and volunteer recruiting!!
If you are able to help us continue our mission to feed anybody and everybody a hot meal with zero barriers and a lot of love, here is a quick list of how you can get involved! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
1. Volunteer! ๐Ÿ™‚ I acknowledge that weโ€™ve (mostly me๐Ÿซข) been a hot mess in the past as we started up this crazy adventure, but we do now have one person to call or show up and ask for. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿชฝ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
Toni from Church @ Dickinson! She is taking over management of our program, so Jill (me) can take more time to focus on saving my family from some corrupt CPS workers in Williston (itโ€™s bad up there guys, like the wild wild west๐Ÿ˜ณ). Anyways mist of you already know that Toni is amazing in all ways and I could not be more excited to have her in charge after witnessing her passion here. She has been here since the very first day too!! So please give Toni a call if youโ€™d like to set up a first time to volunteer. Or stop in between 3&4 on a Tuesday or Thursday and ask for Toni ๐Ÿชฝ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’•
2. Donate food ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’
Our biggest challenge is funding the salad bar. We try to make sure we always have a nice selection of healthy vegetables and fresh fruit/melon.
Also, perishables. If you have meat or cheese of any type that you would like to donate, we are there every day at noon and five and will happily except perishables, including frozen foods!
3. Money! ๐Ÿค‘ Since we are a nonprofit, if you choose to donate money to us, it is tax deductible!!
While we havenโ€™t had the time to set up a structured sponsorship programs (yet), any businesses or individuals that choose to donate to us (employee volunteer time or money) will have the opportunity to be showcased on our page and tagged in our content which has approximately 4K local following for a good sized advertising reach.
We accept cash, of course, or checks can be written to Food Riot Foundation. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿชฝ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
4. Supplies!! Fellow restaurants, do you have any 8โ€ or 9โ€ inch clamshells you could spare? We send a lot of our meals out to go and seem yo always be running out of these! If anyone out there could stock us up with any extra they might have we would really appreciate it!!!
We could also use to go soup cups with lids, deli containers, plastic forks- honestly any type of to go packaging would be helpful!! ๐Ÿ™‚
We appreciate everyone in the community for helping to make this resource possible.
We have witnessed so many amazing moments happen in this great building and it has been a huge blessing to be able to give back in the same location that brought us so many blessings already. ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿชฝ๐Ÿ’•
We look forward to being here for years to come, and always having a seat for everyone at the Food Riot table.
Thank you to anyone who can help, and of course to everyone who has already helped us. And a special thank you to Melissa Gordon who, thanks to her 2k per month donations, we were able to start providing the salad bar. ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿชฝ๐Ÿ’• We appreciate you! ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’•

Guys guys guys! Tonightโ€™s free community meal is going to be Chicken Alfredo with Baker Boy Wheat Rolls and a full fruit and salad bar!! Tuesday May 19, 4:30-6:30 at Food Riot!
Donโ€™t feel like you *need* a free meal but miss having a good Food Riot Alfredo every now and then? Come in and eat, and feel free to leave a free will offering, even if itโ€™s five or ten bucks, it all helps!! ๐Ÿค‘ We need cash right now just as much as we need more volunteers, so if you can provide either, please hop on over to see us!! ๐Ÿ˜
With summer approaching fast, we have already lost or are on notice to lose some of our main volunteers. As a matter of fact, we are also losing two of our three managers within the next week! ๐Ÿ˜ณ Janet Johanson and Taylor Harp have provided the foundation with so many volunteer hours that have been detrimental to us becoming the staple in our community that helps to fill a very important need for services providing access to nutritious food with no barriers. They have both also contributed to our ongoing commitment of providing a fruit and salad bar, not just in labor, but in financial donations at times where we all decided to โ€œplant seedsโ€ with our own money in hopes of inspiring others to also help.
If anyone is interested in helping us get through the summer and ALSO with fundraising projects (which will be FUN, I promise!) I will be having a meeting after cleanup tonight, so around 6:30 and all are welcome!!
If you have already texted me (Jill) at 701-928-1456, I have your text and we will be responding to you in the next day or two but you are also welcome to show up tonight!!

Have you ever been exhausted from blessings? Being so grateful and so relieved at the same time takes up a lot of energy! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿชฝ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’•
There has been very little time to post about all the great things happening with our new nonprofit, but itโ€™s definitely time for an update!
Last week we met Charles, and he is not only a certified grill master, he is a recently retired member of the House of Manna board with a reputation for his huge heart and helping nature.
Charles has pledged to come in and help cook our biweekly meals and we couldnโ€™t be more excited to have him volunteering with us! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
And then we have Nana Barb, who is Toniโ€™s mom and Taylorโ€™s Nana๐Ÿ’• She is visiting from Florida and has been so much help to us! Nana Barb was our Guest Chef on Tuesday and made oodles of noodles! It was the yummiest mac and cheese! ๐Ÿ˜‹

We would like to do a special shout out and farewell to our volunteer, James!
James has been here helping every night, and took it upon himself to take over our biggest challenge, the dish pit!
We are going to miss you this summer, James!
If anyone would like to fill this position over the summer, one or two nights a week, or even just once per month, please text Jill at 701-928-1456 and we will get you scheduled! (this is a no pay/volunteer position, but we do feed you pretty decently๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿฝ๏ธ)

I never met Tana Johnson, but boy oh boy have I heard a lot about her. In 2018, my boss at that time, Tessa, told me all about her friend Tana and Angel 37 Kitchen. Through the years Iโ€™ve talked about wanting to host free food events and more times than not, the person I was talking to would ask me if I knew Tana. She left her mark on this community for sure!!๐Ÿชฝ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿชฝ
A few months ago, I was blessed to meet another amazing woman, Melissa Gordon. Melissa fell in love with our mission and pledged to help support us. She also shared that she had a friend named Tana that she would like to donate in honor of. I knew right away who she meant, because even though I had never met her, I have heard about her caring heart so many times over the years.
Which brings us to now. ๐Ÿ˜ My former boss, Tessa Van Doorne, is a published author now, so I reached out and asked her to write a tribute to Tana, and of course she did not disappoint. ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’•
Thank you so much to Melissa Gordon for your generous donation of $2,000 in Tanaโ€™s name.

โฌ‡๏ธโฌ‡๏ธโฌ‡๏ธ The following tribute was written by Tessa Van Doorne ๐Ÿชฝ๐Ÿ’•๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿชฝโฌ‡๏ธโฌ‡๏ธโฌ‡๏ธ

In Honor of Tana ๐Ÿชฝ ๐Ÿ’š

Some people leave an imprint on your life that never fades, and Tana was one of those people.

From the moment I met her at the Human Service Center, I could feel her energy. It was the kind of energy you donโ€™t forget; she was genuine, compassionate, and deeply rooted in love for others. Tana didnโ€™t just care about peopleโ€ฆ she felt them. Especially those who were underserved, overlooked, or struggling; she saw them, valued them, and showed up for them in ways that truly mattered.

She and I connected on so many levels. We shared conversations about dreams bigger than ourselves, like the need for a homeless shelter in Dickinson and what it could mean for our community. She didnโ€™t just talk about changeโ€ฆ she created it.

Like the angel she truly is, Tana founded Angel 37 Kitchen in honor of her late father, a weekly community meal open to all. No barriers, no judgment, just a place where people could come together, be fed, and feel seen. It was more than a meal; it was connection, dignity, and love.

I was blessed to be part of that mission in many different ways throughout my life, through organizations I worked with, and even alongside my own family. One of my most meaningful memories was hosting a meal in honor of my late grandfather. That experience, like so many others tied to Tana, was rooted in purpose and heart.

One moment I will never forget was during COVID, when Angel 37 Kitchen had to pause. At the time, I was working at CountryHouse, and my coworkers and I were trying to find ways to still support our community. I reached out to Tana about hosting a drive-through Angel 37 meal. I will never forget her excitement and her joy at the opportunity to keep her mission alive despite the challenges of the pandemic. We held it over Thanksgiving, and it meant everything to her. Even in uncertainty, she found a way to continue giving.

Thatโ€™s who Tana was.

An angel on earth. A woman who gave selflessly. A person who made people feel valued, seen, and cared for.

I have no doubt that she is in Heaven, her heart full, watching the continued impact of her legacy. The work being done by the Food Riot Community Kitchen, along with the incredibly generous donation made in her honor by Melissa Gordon, is a reflection of everything Tana stood for.

Her mission didnโ€™t end; it lives on.

And it always will ๐Ÿค

Tessa Van Doorne recently published her first book, Still Standing, Still Becoming.

Our new pantry was on the news!! Thank you Taylor and Toni Harp, Janet Johanson and everyone over at Amen Food Pantry for helping us keep this stocked while we continue to get the news out. This is meant to be for the community by the community, and anyone and everyone is invited to take what you need and leave what you donโ€™t. :)

Thereโ€™s no paperwork or income requirements. The food is for anyone who needs a little help, and for anyone who wants to give a little help.

What a week! Here are just a few behind the scenes shots of some of our MANY volunteers making sure we are able to accommodate as many as 150 guests every Tuesday and Tuesday!
A few weeks ago we put out a call on here for more volunteers and this community of ours did not disappoint!!! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
We would like to shout out to Marathon and Gate City Bank for sending volunteers, who always seem to show up exactly when needed.
And look at our fancy neighbor, Megan, from next door at Urban Unwind!! We appreciate the help so much! ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’•
And to everyone who has shown up, whether it be one time or almost every time, thank you!!
As we grow, we continue to need more help!
If you have any questions or would like to hop on the schedule, please message us on here or email us at [email protected]. Or you can just stop by from 3-4 on Tuesday or Thursday. ๐Ÿ˜
Our kitchen managers are Janet, Taylor and Toni, and one of them are almost always available during our hours of service. These ladies are also volunteers, and have been the backbone of keeping these meal services going. Let them know you are wanting to volunteer and they will throw an apron you and put you to work. ๐Ÿชฝ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿณ
