We are incredibly honored to share that Modern Stone Age Kitchen was voted Best Healthy Eats Restaurant and Best Neighborhood Restaurant in Chesapeake Bay Magazine's Best of the Best 2026!

While we're grateful for the recognition, what makes these awards especially meaningful is what they represent. Every loaf of sourdough, every scratch-made meal, every fermented vegetable, every partnership with local farmers, and every conversation across the counter is part of a much bigger mission to reconnect people with real food.

The "Healthy Eats" award reflects years of commitment to creating food that is nourishing, delicious, and rooted in traditional food preparation techniques.

The "Neighborhood Restaurant" award reminds us that what we're really building is much more than a restaurant. We're building a community.

Whether you've joined us for breakfast after dropping the kids off at school, met friends for lunch, attended a class, stopped in for coffee, brought family visiting from out of town, or simply made us part of your weekly routine, you've helped create the place that these awards recognize.

Thank you for supporting local farms, local food, and our team of incredible employees who work hard every day to make this vision a reality!!

We're proud of the food we create, but we're even more proud of the community we're creating together.

Make some summer plans to get out and visit all these incredible food establishments on the Eastern Shore! Thank you again for believing in what we're building!

Last weekend may have been Memorial Day, but here in Maryland it felt more like March than the start of summer. Thankfully, the weather has finally turned, the grills are firing up, and backyard gathering season is officially underway.

That makes this the perfect time to talk burgers.

Not because we think burgers are unhealthy, but because they can be one of the best examples of how familiar foods can be transformed through better ingredients, traditional preparation methods, and support of local farms.

Bill's blog last week took a closer look at the burger - from the bun to the condiments - and shares some of the simple upgrades we make to maximize flavor, nutrition, and connection to the people who grow our food. And he's teaching a Ultimate Burger Class right now!

Check out this pic of Billy from nearly 10 years ago enjoying a 100% scratch-made burger at our kitchen table. Long before the Modern Stone Age Kitchen existed, these conversations - and cooking - about real food were already happening around our family table.

Plus here is a pic Brianna took of burgers for the recipe in Eat Like a Human (this pic is in the book!) and also a pic of the Burger event Bill did with a class at Washington College through the Food Lab. We have been creating scratch-made burgers for a LONG time! Maybe we start offering them at the MSAK????

Whether you're grilling this weekend or just curious about how we think about food, we hope you'll take a few minutes to read the article.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country and the freedoms we so often take for granted. 🇺🇸

Today is more than a long weekend, cookouts, and gatherings around the table - it is a moment to reflect with gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we could enjoy those simple freedoms with the people we love.

We remember. We honor. We are grateful.

Tea Party weekend is finally here 🎉

Tomorrow starting at 8am, Bill and Brianna will be behind the bar on the patio mixing up three fun cocktails for the weekend - all made the Modern Stone Age way with real ingredients and no refined sugars.

Because honestly… festivals, parades, food, drinks, and seeing everyone downtown are part of what makes weekends like this so much fun (regardless of a few rain drops). And we love being able to create options that let people enjoy it all while still feeling good!

One of our favorite moments from last year was seeing fellow restaurant owner Billy Gordon stop by for cocktails and hang out for a bit. Truly one of the best compliments is when other chefs and restaurant owners choose to spend part of their weekend with you.

Whether you are starting your morning with breakfast sandwiches and a cocktail or swinging by during all the Tea Party festivities for lunch, we cannot wait to see everyone downtown this weekend. 🧡

Meet the incredible interns helping bring fresh energy and creativity to our team this summer! We’re excited to welcome Chris, Ansley, and Tshazi, three outstanding Washington College student-athletes who are combining their leadership, discipline, and teamwork from the field and court into meaningful work with us.

We’re also thrilled to host Giancarlo, our residential intern visiting all the way from Canada for a two-week experience with our organization. Giancarlo brings an international perspective and a genuine enthusiasm for learning and contributing. Together, this talented group represents the power of young leaders stepping up, sharing their ideas, and helping us grow. Be sure to give them a warm welcome when you see them around!

Over the past few days, so many of you have reached out after reading Brianna’s essay, “My Mother Calls It Church, I Call It Dinner” in our Monday email. The messages, comments, and conversations it sparked have honestly meant so much to our family.

We already shared the excitement of her graduation from UVA and the incredible honor of receiving the Edgar F. Shannon Award, but this essay feels like the deeper story behind all of it.

In many ways, the piece captures the heart of what we have been trying to build at Modern Stone Age Kitchen from the very beginning - not just a place to eat, but a place where people slow down, connect, gather, and feel cared for around the table.

One line especially continues to stay with us:

“The table is still there. All of us, myself included, have to choose to come back to it.”

That idea feels more important than ever right now.

So many of you have shared that you feel something different when you walk through our doors - the conversations, the warmth, the sense of community, the feeling of being known. Reading Brianna’s words reminded us that all of those little moments matter more than we sometimes realize.

For those who have not had a chance to read it yet, we wanted to share it here because it speaks so beautifully to food, family, presence, and connection.

We hope you’ll take a few minutes to read it and maybe share it with someone you love. 🧡💙

One of our two biggest weekends of the entire year - alongside Downrigging in the fall - is finally here, and we are so excited to welcome all of you to Chestertown this weekend.

We’re trying not to obsess over the weather forecast just yet 😅 and are hoping things shift in our favor, but rain or shine, we’ll be here all weekend with scratch-made food, sourdough pastries, coffee, cocktails, and our outdoor patio bar ready to go.

Whether you’re visiting town for the festivities or you’re one of our amazing locals, we hope you’ll stop by and celebrate with us!

Happy Birthday to our incredible General Manager, Zach! 🎉

If you’ve had anything to do with Modern Stone Age Kitchen, we can pretty much guarantee Zach has had a hand in some part of your experience. From the big-picture operations to the tiny details that keep everything moving, he truly does it all.

Zach leads with consistency, heart, calm under pressure, and an incredible work ethic, and we are unbelievably lucky to have him as part of this journey with us - for 5 years!! There is so much of what happens here each day that simply would not happen without him.

For his birthday dessert request, Zach asked Bill for a fruit cobbler… and of course Bill took it to another level with a fermented spring fruit cobbler topped with our house-made granola and fermented whipped cream. 🍓🫐 Honestly, it was such a hit with the entire team that we may need to figure out how to get this one onto the menu.

We hope you enjoyed spending your birthday with us at the shop today and that you have a fun and relaxing evening celebrating with your family because you deserve nothing but the best!!

Please make sure to drop Zach some birthday love in the comments! 🎂👏

Our Fermented Gazpacho is back for the season. 🍅🌿

A traditional summer soup, reimagined through fermentation.

Fresh tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, and sourdough are lightly fermented before being blended into a chilled soup that is bright, complex, and alive. Fermentation deepens flavor while also enhancing digestibility, reducing plant compounds, and increasing nutrient availability.

Finished with extra virgin olive oil and fermented cream, this is summer food through the Modern Stone Age lens - taking familiar ingredients and transforming them through traditional processes into something more nourishing.

Cool, refreshing, and packed with flavor for warmer days ahead. ☀️

Have it as a bowl or a side with your sandwich during lunch 11am - 3pm

Built on our wild, long-fermented sourdough crust with ramp leaf pesto, asparagus from Lockbriar Farms, house-made pasta filata cheese, and finished with fresh ricotta (both cheeses made from Nice Farms milk.
