Summer missive from the farm
Greetings from our hill farm in summer! We spent the spring and early summer planting hundreds of trees across our farm, including poplars, lindens, fruit trees, seaberries, and more! Some trees have been planted along fencelines to serve as windbreaks, future living fenceposts, and to grow out “tree hay” for the cows. Others have been planted for food and medicine crops.
We’re grateful to our hardworking crew who have been showing up with such strength and enthusiasm, even on high heat days (we’ve already had several days in the mid-90’s!). We have a couple of returning folks as well as a few new ones, and it has been a pleasure to work the fields with them, and to now introduce them to the most fun part of the season: the many beautiful harvests!
Recent abundant harvests include arnica, thyme, roses, comfrey, plantain, savory, tarragon, and wildharvests of St. John’s Wort (for fresh oil and tincture) and red clover.
Coming soon: catnip, sage, and many calendula harvests, as well as our wildharvests of raspberry leaf, which is always a delight, and so many more!
The land offers us so much, and we are grateful!
Herbs for Smoky Skies
No matter where you live, you're likely to be experiencing some poor air quality due to wildfire smoke this summer. This did not used to be a reality for us in Vermont, but it is now, and we are leaning on herbs for support during these times that are challenging for our respiratory systems, our livelihoods, and our beloved green planet.
Happy high summer,
Taylor & Misha
