It's rosé season out there, and we've got plenty of it in-house. But our glass pour of mazcazwines deserves special attention. A beautiful blend of Grenache and Syrah, with just 6 hours of skin contact, this light, coral wine is full of ripe summer strawberry, guava, and bright citrus, making a refreshing, crisp rosé that’s perfect for summer but a delight year-round.

What makes this wine so important to us, beyond its obvious charms of delicious perfection, is the winemaker who produces it, Michele D'Aprix.  A fixture in our local community, Michele is the only American Female Winemaker in Bordeaux, France.  When not in France crafting her wines, though, Michele keeps a residence in Camden, which also serves as her import license address.  Michele’s wines are the only you’ll ever see with Camden, Maine on the back label.

She found her way to wine a bit unexpectedly. As an undergraduate, she studied organic chemistry, but with no real vision of where that might take her, she took a summer job at Dry Creek Vineyard in Sonoma County. The rest, as they say, is history with a generous dose of tenacity, hard work, talent and determination. She has worked in vineyards from California to Spain, but France is where her career has settled. She serves as the winemaker at Manoir du Gravoux, working hand-in-hand with the Emile family,  in Castillon, a classic appellation on the Right Bank of Bordeaux.

Maz Caz, named after her nephew Caz, grew out of a desire to step beyond the structure of Bordeaux and expand into the Southern Rhône.  Produced as a single estate in Costières de Nîmes, the first Regenerative Organic Wine Estate in the France, the Maz Caz wines embody the proximity to the Mediterranean, lending a fresh and playful character.

Michele will be leaving for France shortly, for another year of harvest, but she can often be found at The Wine Seller in Rockland with her partner Matt, a wine aficionado in his own right, who manages the selection there. We’re proud to support Michele, so stop by for a glass this week, or peek at our bottle list to see her range of styles.
