For me being Cajun and serving Cajun food is not a competition it’s a community. ❤️

There is variance in Cajun food just like anything else. No two gumbos and no two étouffées are alike in the same way the burger you order from one restaurant tastes different than the burger you get down the street. Same reason everybody has a favorite pizza place despite there being a million spots to grab a slice.

Cajun food is deeply personal. For us it’s family traditions. It represents geography. It’s what our maw maw’s had in the pot growing up. Recipes, practices and procedures passed down, altered, adapted, with love through generations.

The future of Cajun culture depends greatly on current Cajuns being vulnerable and brave enough to share our culture with others. The coast lines are disappearing. They say we must find a new home soon. Every single time somebody from Louisiana takes the leap to share our food, music, language, and traditions… that is an act of Cajun preservation.

Every pot of gumbo cooked in another state, every accordion played outside of Louisiana, every person taught the meaning of “lagniappe” and exposed to zydeco or taught to peel crawfish tails in a backyard boil… it matters.

We have a DUTY to carry our culture into places where it can continue to thrive. ♥️

Shout out to The Fruit Stand & Seafood for the beautiful and delicious crawfish we enjoyed for my birthday. Chef Donny Young knocked it out the park YET again. Crawfish Master, Indeed.

Still too much confusion on our end to supply a boil to the public. If you’re not aware Illinois has made fresh crawfish/crawdads/crayfish/Louisiana crawfish illegal to posses in any capacity 🤯 and where I’m from it’s basically a sin to use frozen crawfish. Still hard to wrap my head around my favorite meal being illegal but whatever Illinois always has some crazy laws going LOL. Y’all be patient with us we planning a lil shrimp and crab boil here in a few weeks. 🩷

The coolest part of what we do is meeting and bonding with Cajun people living all across the Midwest. It’s the shared understanding that nobody cooks Cajun food quite like we do back home. 🥹

Getting the nod of approval from Cajun women who KNOW exactly how it’s supposed to taste… man. That’s all the validation my heart will ever need. ❤️

I remember so vividly moving to this area and feeling that VOID. Missing the food, the culture, the music, the conversations, the comfort of home. Missing Louisiana in a way that people who have never been there probably can’t fully understand.

And now… somehow… we’ve become a little hub for homesick Cajuns to gather in fellowship. To eat food that tastes familiar. To hear accents that sound like family. To tell stories. To feel connected again.

That is the part of this that will mean the most to me.
