They planned a getaway. The sheep had other plans.
New Zealand, 2016. Four people in a stolen car. Police chasing them through Central Otago for more than 90 minutes. Road spikes damaged a tyre, but they kept going.
Then they hit the most Kiwi traffic jam imaginable.
About 150 sheep.
No sirens. No negotiation. Just wool, attitude, and absolutely no interest in anyone’s urgent travel plans.
You can almost hear the lead sheep: “Sorry, bro. This lane is for grazing customers only.” 😂
The car stopped. Police caught all four.
And the sheep’s owner? A local police officer.
Imagine coming home after work: “Good job today, team. Help yourselves to the lawn.”
Now, sheep have always had the numbers here. In 1982, New Zealand had about 22 sheep for every person. By June 2026, estimates put that at just over four each.
Our population grew, farming changed, and land shifted into dairy, forestry and other uses.
The flock got smaller. The road manners stayed the same.
So next time you’re stuck behind sheep, show a little respect.
You could be holding up an entire police department on its lunch break.
