It’s with a heavy heart that we share some difficult news with our community.
After 10 incredible years as a kaupapa driven charity, the board has made the hard decision to close the doors at Stitch Kitchen following our final class on September 20. While we celebrated a decade of community sewing late last year, a massive milestone for a small trust, the funding climate in New Zealand has only become more difficult over the last three years, with many worthy charities, all competing for the same diminishing funding. Everyone is doing it tough.
We have been unable to stabilize our financial position and can no longer responsibly continue to operate.
We want to take a moment to honor everyone who has made Stitch Kitchen so special:
Fiona: The constant heart of the studio. We acknowledge her deep commitment, expertise, and everything she has done since founding Stitch Kitchen for our wider community.
Our Tutors & Volunteers: Thank you. Small charities simply wouldn't last a few months without the endless hours of work, energy, imagination, and community spirit you give without expectation. You are what keeps our community alive and whole.
Community orgs and supporters: Without all of you coming together to collaborate and share in the mahi that matters, we would not have made the changes we did. You all make Dunedin special.
Funding bodies: With gratitude to the DCC, Otago Community Trust, Lotteries grants, COGS, and all of the funders who invested in our mahi. Your support kept waste out of landfill, built skills for our members, and made sustainability a reality for our community.
What’s next:
Stitch Kitchen will be running sales until our shut down date, giving everyone a chance to support us in the last month of business. Come down and say hi, buy some treasures, and wish us farewell.
Farewell Event: We want to gather to share our appreciation and farewell this kaupapa together. We’ll share details soon.
Closing Down Sale: Look out for details in the coming weeks as we clear the studio.
Questions: Feel free to reach out via email if you have any questions.
Thank you for a wonderful 10 years of sewing, sustainability, and community spirit. 💚
