For ten years, 1947 Eatery has told the story of India through its food.

Not one region. Not one style. Not one definition of Indian cuisine.

Our menus have travelled through the streets of Delhi, Bombay to the kitchens of Punjab and Hyderabad, and across borders where centuries of culture have shaped the food of the subcontinent.

Some dishes are humble. Some are celebratory. Some are reimagined for a modern dining room. But their foundations remain grounded in the traditions, spices and techniques that inspired them.

That has been the philosophy of 1947 since we opened our doors a decade ago.

To explore. To respect tradition. To bring different stories of India to one table.

It is the most important month of our year.

We’ve given 1947 Eatery a new chapter.

Rich leather, warm timber, deeper tones and softer light now shape the room, while keeping the dark, industrial character that has always been part of who we are.

A space designed to feel intimate, warm and distinctly 1947.

The food remains rooted in the flavours and stories we have spent the last decade building. The room has simply evolved around it.

Today, we received our official Michelin Guide New Zealand 2026 plaque, a recognition that marks ten years of dedication to craft, consistency, and the culinary story we’ve worked hard to build.

Being included in the Michelin Guide’s first New Zealand edition is an honour we share with our entire community, our guests, our team, and everyone who has supported 1947 Eatery over the years. This plaque represents countless hours in the kitchen, a commitment to quality, and a passion for showcasing the flavours we love.

Jalebi is not something you plate. It is something you make in the moment.

The batter hits hot ghee. The swirl forms in seconds. Straight into warm syrup with saffron and rose. No holding. No shortcuts. You get it as it was meant to be eaten.

It is one of the most recognised sweets across the subcontinent, but very few places take the time to do it fresh for every order.

The great Indian debate.

Veg Biryani or Veg Pulao?

Some say veg biryani does not exist.
Others defend it with passion.

At 1947 Eatery and Times of India, we believe the difference is simple.

If vegetables are cooked first and rice is added later, that is pulao.
If the rice and marinated vegetables are layered, sealed and cooked on dum with saffron and spices, that is biryani.

So we made ours the traditional way.

Layered.
Sealed.
Slow cooked.

Now the question is yours to answer.
