With a 35 foot waist and an impressive 4’6” long nose, the Statue of Liberty has been welcoming visitors to New York harbour for 140 years and in the process becoming a global icon. Designed by a Frenchman and gifted to the United States by France it was intended to have it in place on Bedloe’s Island by 1876 to mark the centenary of the American Declaration of Independence. In the end it missed it by a decade. To raise funds, the torch-bearing arm was exhibited at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, and the head was displayed at the 1878 Paris World’s Fair. Manufactured in France, it was shipped to America in 214 crates and reassembled in four months and dedicated by US President Grover Cleveland on October 28th 1886. With an internal steel skeleton, designed by Gustave Eiffel, of tower fame, it was then skinned in copper sheet a mere 2mm thick, and the finished article stood at a colossal 151 feet. Until 1916 the torch held aloft by the statue was iternally lit served as a lighthouse. I like to think that Bootmakers, on these dark dreary evenings, acts as something similar. Come on in and have a pizza. Go on…..

These are our specials for week commencing October 26th

THURSDAY
Oven roasted aubergine, ricotta, chopped roasted spring onion and fresh mint on a light tomato and mozzarella base.

FRIDAY
Smoked and spicy chorizo, kalamata olives, roasted peppers and feta, on a light tomato and mozzarella base.

SATURDAY
Figs, fennel, gorgonzola and hazelnuts on a cream and herb base with a balsamic glaze and rocket to finish.

SUNDAY
Buttered garlic mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, spinach and prosciutto (added when the pizza is out of the oven), on a light tomato and mozzarella base.

There can be few people reading this who are not already celebrating the filing of U.S. Patent no. 1,394,450 on October 18th 1921. I am, of course, referring to the invention of the original pop-up toaster by Charles Perkins Strite, a young man from Cardiff who popped up in Minnesota during World War I and noticed that burnt toast was repeatedly being served by the cafeteria in the factory where he worked. Good to see that his concentration was not distracted by the greatest conflict ever experienced by mankind…Anyway, post-war he set up the Waters Genter Company and began selling a version of the toaster to restaurants and then moved on to a domestic model that could control the toasting time. By 1930 more than a million units of the “TOASTMASTER” were being sold annually. They have yet to invent a pop-up toaster for pizzas and, I think, for obvious reasons. But don’t let that stop you popping down to Bootmakers for a wood-fired pizza – choose from our regular menu, select a special or devise your own topping (we’re very flexible!).

THURSDAY
Roasted pumpkin, goats cheese, pistachio nuts and home-made pesto and on a light mozzarella and tomato base.
Not all pumpkins are made for carving…

FRIDAY
Moroccan style lamb, fire-roasted peppers, feta with a chilli honey and yogurt dressing ion a light tomato base.
No mozzarella, but plenty of flavour.

SATURDAY
Stilton cheese, sliced pear, walnuts and kalamata olives on a cream and herb base.
An old favourite, but with added olives.

SUNDAY
Chorizo, mushrooms and buttered spinach on a light tomato and mushroom base.
Usual rules apply – lots of mushrooms.

Fancy a tastier Sunday this week? We’re bringing a little extra pizza to your Sunday with a special lunchtime opening at Bootmakers this weekend.

Heading to an afternoon showing at The Plaza Wincanton this Sunday? Make a day of it and swing by for a pizza afterwards. Perfect for our younger pizza fans and anyone else who fancies sourdough in the afternoon.

Our specials for the week 12 October

Also special for this week is Wincanton Carnival on Friday – please book your tables ahead of time if you can and feel free to pre-order if possible!

THURSDAY: Calzone folded pizza with brie, West Country ham, cheese, tomato, and chunky field mushrooms.

FRIDAY: Italian-style meatballs with caramelised red onion, ricotta and cherry tomatoes on a tomato and cheese base.

SATURDAY: Posh Hawaiian with fresh roast pineapple, prosciutto and rocket - we’re adding the prosciutto after it comes out of the oven, it’s more authentic that way – as if a Hawaiian pizza could ever be “authentic”!

SUNDAY: Olives, tuna, capers, anchovies and courgette on a cream and herb base. The cream balances the saltiness perfectly.

Demand is high, so please book ahead if you can (for tables or takeaway) by text to our pizza room on 07471 153418.

FREE GARLIC BREAD with every order this Thursday!
Just like the premiere of Dr. No on this very week in 1962, here at Bootmakers Pizza, we know a thing or two about launching an absolute classic.

While the world holds its breath, with the identity of the next 007 still famously clouded in secrecy, we’ve solved the mystery of the perfect sourdough crust. Whether you prefer your toppings shaken or stirred, we’ll be right here, undercover in Wincanton, serving up pizzas so good they should probably be classified.

Not yet a convert? Look at our menu, or try one of these specials for the week of 5th October

Thursday: Moroccan spiced lamb, cherry tomatoes, fresh coriander, tahini-yoghurt dressing and mozzarella. Intensely savoury, with the tangy contrast of the dressing.

Friday: Ratatouille base with mozzarella, parsley butter, brie and bacon. Topped with rocket. A comforting French-Italian fusion that brilliantly balances rich, creamy textures with bright, peppery freshness.

Saturday: Cream and herb base with goat’s cheese, fresh figs, thyme and balsamic glaze. An elegant cheese board transported onto a warm, crispy pizza crust.

Sunday: Tomato and mozzarella sourdough base with garlic butter, lots of mushrooms and homemade red pesto. Infusing the base with garlic butter before layering ensures that every bite is rich and aromatic.

Please book ahead if you can (for tables or takeaway) by text to our pizza room on 07471 153418. We take preorders anytime.

A mere 142 years ago, a Jewish immigrant named Michael Marks arrived from Belarus and began working as a pedlar in Leeds. He did well enough to open his first Penny Bazaar market stall with the slogan ‘Don’t ask the price, it’s a penny”. Ten years later, with expansion in mind, he sought out a partner and settled on Tom Spencer, a senior shop cashier. And so on September 28th 1894 Marks and Spencer was born. By 1900 they had opened 12 Penny Bazaar stores and 24 market stalls, and they continued to grow and grow into the retail giant they are today. They have always been at the forefront of retail innovation – opening the first self service store in 1947, they were the first major retailer to introduce sell-by dates and the first retailer to ban smoking in their stores in 1959. From humble beginnings on the streets of Leeds, M&S became the first British retailer to make a pre-tax profit of more than £1 billion in 1998. Despite their origins in fancy goods and clothes they are now best known for their range of food, a bit like us really. Remember, this is not just pizza, this is Bootmakers pizza.

Thursday
Butternut squash, goats cheese and crispy fried sage leaves on a light tomato and mozzarella base.
Tangy cheese, sweet squash and earthy aromatic sage. It’s got autumn written all over it.

Friday
Chorizo, fresh homemade pesto, mushrooms and brie on a light tomato and mozzarella base.
Lots of mushroom, lots of pesto.

Saturday
Pear, and blue cheese, on a cream and herb base, finished with fresh prosciutto and balsamic glaze.
Salty and sweet, great combination.

Sunday
Bacon, buttery spinach and feta with kalamata olives and fresh rosemary on a cream and herb base.
There’s a lot going on here, taste-wise, but it works!

Please book ahead if you can (for tables or takeaway) by text to our pizza room on 07471 153418.
We take preorders anytime.

After the resounding success of dough balls last week, we are putting them on the menu!
Simple as they look, dough balls are a great test of a pizzeria's dough. There are no toppings to hide behind, just the base itself, and our dough holds its own. Round leavened dough has been baked this way for thousands of years; it turns out we're just carrying on a very old tradition. They take a while to prepare, so please order ahead if you can.

Specials for the week of 21st September

Thursday: Creamy burrata with bacon, homemade pesto and mushrooms on a tomato and cheese base.

Friday: Moroccan spiced lamb, cherry tomatoes, fresh coriander and mint yoghurt, on a tomato and fresh mozzarella base.

Saturday: Goat’s cheese, caramelised onions, sweet chillies, and fresh figs on a cream, oregano and mozzarella base.

Sunday: Chorizo, marinated artichokes and red onion on a tomato and cheese base.
