We opened Bridge 42 at the end of last September — one of the toughest periods the hospitality industry has ever faced. Rising costs and the ongoing cost‑of‑living crisis make it challenging for small, independent businesses to grow sustainably.
We’re doing okay, and we’re proud of that. But good businesses don’t stand still. To improve, expand, and employ more local people, we need to reinvest — and right now, the current VAT system makes that harder than it should be.
Across Europe, most countries apply a 10% VAT rate to hospitality. The UK’s 20% rate puts British businesses at a disadvantage. A fairer rate would help independent restaurants, cafés, pubs, and bars not just survive, but thrive.
