Red creeping thyme is far better for the planet than your grass lawn.

It barely needs water, feeds pollinators, doesn't need to be mowed, requires no fertilizer, repels mosquitoes, and is edible.

It can also be grown on almost every continent.

Humpback whales are gaining attention for an extraordinary behavior that’s reshaping how scientists view life in the ocean—they appear to step in and defend other species from killer whale attacks.

In documented research covering more than 100 encounters, humpbacks were seen interrupting orca hunts with an astonishing success rate of around 90%. What makes this even more remarkable is that they don’t only protect their own young. They’ve been observed intervening on behalf of seals, sea lions, and even large fish like sunfish.

In some cases, humpbacks have used their massive bodies and barnacle-covered fins to physically shield victims—or even lift smaller animals out of danger zones in the water. After the threat passes, they often leave the area immediately, showing no obvious pursuit of food or reward.

This unusual behavior has sparked debate among marine biologists. Some believe it’s an instinct tied to protecting their own species, while others suggest it could point to a deeper level of awareness, possibly even empathy. Whatever the cause, these interventions show a striking pattern: humpbacks repeatedly place themselves between danger and prey, even when there’s nothing directly in it for them.

For now, one thing is clear—these gentle giants may be playing a far bigger role in the ocean ecosystem than we ever realized.
