It’s all change here at The Farmer’s Boy as we move from summer into autumn.

We’re getting ready for Halloween and Dinner in the Dark, changing the menus, starting to look at Christmas, updating the website and making sure everything is up to date online.

There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that you don’t always see.

Marketing is a big part of running a business. You can have the best business in the world, but if nobody knows you’re there, what’s the point?

And then there are the “broken windows” — the little things that need fixing before they become bigger problems. A toilet seat, something left on a table, not saying hello or goodbye. Small things, but they all matter.

Our job is to get people through the door, and then look after them properly.

And of course, if you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary or simply bringing the kids along, keep an eye out for our Posh & Becks chairs!

Dinner in the Dark is coming up on the last Friday and Saturday of October, so if you fancy something a little different, now’s the time to book.

LET’S HELP EACH OTHER

There are so many brilliant small food businesses popping up locally — burger vans, pizza vans, dessert vans and more — and Phil wants to help bring them together.

We’re thinking about putting on a live music night in November here at The Farmer’s Boy, with a few local food businesses joining us.

We’ll keep it simple on our side with pie and mash, and you can bring your own speciality to the evening — burgers, pizzas, crepes, desserts, whatever you do.

The idea is simple: small businesses supporting small businesses.

Have you ever wondered how Dinner in the Dark started at The Farmer’s Boy?

Around 13–14 years ago, the power went out on Halloween. We had around 60–70 people in the pub, and with the kitchen running on gas, we managed to get the last few meals out.

Everyone thought it was part of the evening!

We started putting candles on the tables, candles in the toilets and wherever we could, and somehow it created a truly magical atmosphere.

And that’s how Dinner in the Dark was born.

It’s the one night where you don’t need to worry about how your food looks, because you can’t see it! You just enjoy the food, the atmosphere and the experience.

Dinner in the Dark takes place on the last Friday and Saturday of October, and bookings are already coming in.

A few people have been asking, so Phil wanted to confirm — Prime Time is continuing!

Sunday at The Farmers Boy Inn.

If you’re looking for a proper Sunday lunch today, we’re serving food straight through from 12 noon until 8pm.

There’s no afternoon break in service, so whether you’re joining us for a traditional Sunday lunch or prefer to eat a little later, the kitchen is open all day.

Today we have roast beef and roast pork, our full range of homemade pies, plus a selection of specials.

We also have vegetarian and vegan choices available, all of our pies are now gluten free, and we have lactose free options too.

A little look at our desserts at The Farmer’s Boy.

We don’t put loads out at once because many of our desserts are freshly prepared, and we want to keep everything fresh for our guests.

But one question we get asked a lot is: “Where do you get your cheesecakes from?”

Our cheesecakes come from Eloise’s Cheesecakes, based in Newent. They’ve been one of our top-selling desserts for the last two or three years, with lots of different flavours and varieties to choose from.

If you’re a cheesecake fan, you’ll definitely want to give them a try next time you visit us.
