VAT’s the Problem – 10% is fair for hospitality.
Hospitality is one of the UK’s greatest success stories. It employs millions of people — including over 3 million directly across the sector — gives young people their first jobs, keeps high streets alive, and brings communities together.
Yet the industry faces enormous pressure from rising energy costs, food inflation, significant employment costs, unjust business rates, and the highest tax burden in the UK economy — compounded by a 20% VAT rate that is among the highest in Europe.
On top of everything else, this rate is unsustainable. Many European countries already support hospitality with lower VAT rates because they recognise its importance to society and the economy. The UK deserves the same fairness.
A reduction to 10% would enable businesses to invest in jobs, support customers, and strengthen our high streets and local communities. When hospitality venues close, we lose far more than places to eat and drink — we lose connection, opportunity, and local identity.
We are proud to stand with the campaign, spearheaded by Tom Kerridge and supported across the sector. Please sign the petition and help secure a fairer future for hospitality: www.vatstheproblem.co.uk
