England’s Historic Pie House: Home Made Pies, pour-your-own pints, pub games, a walled Apothecary Garden, and 25 years in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide. Old Exeter was established in 1130 and has traded for almost 900 years. Sir Walter Raleigh was arrested here on July 19 1603 for treason and taken to the Tower of London. His cousin, Sir Francis Drake was also a regular. We're England's Historic Pie House serving our Home Made Pies and other comfort food every day. Private & Party bookings taken. With a maze of small rooms and corridors, you can enjoy our Bar & Snug, Confessional & Parlour and the Otter Tap Room, our hideaway where you can pour your own pints and play traditional pub games! Outside is our stunning walled Apothecary Garden (with cider bar & pizzeria). We're in 'Britain's Best Real Heritage Pubs' guide, also the 'Good Beer Guide' for 24 years. 🎥👻 Throwback Thursday… to when ITV came calling to explore our reputation as Devon’s spookiest pub!

Joining us was the wonderful Rosemary Griggs, splendidly dressed as Sir Walter Raleigh’s mother and bringing a little Tudor history to life among our old stone walls.

A few behind-the-scenes moments from a day of cameras, costumes and ghostly tales at the Old Exeter Inn.

With Halloween just around the corner, we had to dust these off…

WE’RE HIRING — BAR MANAGER

The Old Exeter Inn | Ashburton, Devon

We’re looking for an experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic Bar Manager to join our friendly team at England’s historic pie house.

We’re an independent, beautifully restored pub with almost 900 years of history — and a drinks range that’s entirely our own to choose.

We want someone who genuinely loves what they do. Someone who knows their cask ales and Devon c***rs, gets excited about craft b**rs and independent distilleries, appreciates a good w**e, and takes pride in giving customers a wonderful experience.

Working alongside our Front of House Manager, you’ll take responsibility for the bar, including cellar management, drinks selection, stock control, service standards and leading the team on shift.

You’ll need solid bar management experience, full cellar training, excellent people skills and the confidence to lead by example.

Full-time position, including evenings and weekends.

If you love great drinks, great hospitality and the idea of making your mark on a truly extraordinary historic pub, we’d love to hear from you.

📩 Send your CV to [email protected]

Please share with anyone who might be just the person we’re looking for!

Happy International Dog Day

At England’s Historic Pie House, we believe history — and time spent relaxing — is always better shared, especially with your four-legged friends.

VIPs (Very Important Pooches) are always welcome here:
• A special dog b**r barrel (fresh H₂O) waiting in the garden
• Treats at the bar for our furry companions
• Cosy corners and a secret garden perfect for wagging tails

Because life’s too short not to share pies, pints, and history with your best friend.
