In our smooth interpretation of a 1950s café, we have created an airy space with sleek touches, such as an authentic zinc bar from Paris and custom-made Art Deco floor tiles. Balzac’s third café, opened in 2006, resides in Toronto’s hotbed of high-tech, media and cultural companies — a place for the free exchange of ideas and a village within a city that preserves its links to the past while forgoing a vision of a lofty future. Our café is located in the old Irwin Toy Factory, now part of a mixed development known as the Toy Factory Lofts. This condo project has turned the area into a favoured spot for urban professionals to get plugged into business as well as pleasure.

Home is your first place. Work is your second. The third is where community happens: cafés, libraries, barbershops, the park bench with the good view.

Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term “third place” in 1989, and the research since has been pretty clear. Casual conversations with people you half know make us happier and more connected. Even a real chat with your barista counts.
