Where it all began… ☕
Back in 1993, Jon Meyer started roasting coffee as a passion project. He’d rolled into Nelson in the ‘70s on his motorcycle from Montreal, and by the early ‘90s he and his buddy Jim were looking for a way out of forestry and decided to try their hand at roasting coffee.
They set up shop in the 100-year-old brick building beside Hall Street Park (Pitchfork), took a one-hour lesson on a 1kg Italian Petroncini roaster, and got to work. They gave out beans around town, asked everyone what they liked, and tweaked the roasts by feel.
That roasting room was our very first café. Jon and Jim loved nothing more than visiting with customers and pouring coffee for the neighbours. These days Jon shares ownership with Anne, and that same love of good coffee and good company is still at the heart of everything we do.
Jon celebrated his birthday last week, though nobody knows exactly how old he turned (not his kids, and maybe not even Jon). So if you spot him around town or at the café, wish him a happy birthday and thank him for starting something that means so much to all of us. 🖤
