Mike's Journey to Recovery
A message from his wife, Joni
In the early morning hours of September 15, Mike was on his way to work when he wias involved in a serious motorcycle accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury.
Due to the severity of his injuries, Mike was airlifted to Moncton for emergency neurosurgery. During the procedure, surgeons removed a portion of his skull, known as a bone flap, to relieve pressure on his brain. Mike remained in a coma for approximately two weeks and required a tracheostomy to assist with breathing while on a ventilator.
After 16 days in Moncton, Mike was transferred back to Prince Edward Island to begin what we knew would be an extensive rehabilitation journey.
During his first 10 days back on PEI, Mike began showing encouraging signs of progress. He was able to sit up in a wheelchair and was even beginning to speak again. These were incredibly hopeful moments for our family.
Unfortunately, our relief was short-lived.
Mike suddenly became unresponsive, prompting an emergency CT scan. The scan revealed a significant buildup of fluid around his brain, creating dangerous pressure. He was urgently transferred back to Moncton in the middle of the night for another emergency surgery to relieve that pressure.
Although the procedure initially helped, the fluid buildup returned just two days later.
On October 15, Mike underwent another surgery to have a permanent shunt placed in his head. This device is designed to drain excess fluid from his brain into his abdomen, helping to regulate the pressure. The shunt will remain in place for the rest of his life. During this surgery, doctors also replaced the bone flap that had been removed following his accident.
Following this latest procedure, Mike remained asleep for approximately one week. He is now slowly beginning to wake up, which gives us hope. However, fluid remains present, and his shunt has already required one adjustment. We are currently awaiting further scans and consultations with his neurosurgical team to determine the next steps in his recovery.
Mike has already overcome so much, but we know there is still a very long and uncertain road ahead.
As a family, we are taking things one day at a time, celebrating every small improvement and holding on to hope through the difficult moments.
Our five children and I are incredibly grateful for the love, kindness, prayers, and support we have received from our family, friends, and community.
This journey has been overwhelming in ways we could never have imagined, but knowing we are surrounded by so many caring people has meant more to us than words can express.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for standing beside Mike and our family as we navigate this difficult journey toward recovery.
With love and gratitude,
Joni and Family
