How does Casa Fuego celebrate our Independence Day at home? 🇲🇽
In my home, it has always been a costumbre — like in so many, many Mexican families — to make a big, beautiful pot of pozole to celebrate. And honestly, I can’t imagine September without it.
Pozole is one of those dishes that feels like a celebration all by itself. It’s a traditional Mexican soup made with hominy (large, nixtamalized corn kernels), meat, and a flavorful broth. Depending on the region and the family, you’ll find red, green, or white pozole, and of course, every family has their own way of making it.
For many Mexican families, pozole is especially connected to September 15th and 16th. Independence Day is a time when families and friends gather together, stay up late, share food, drinks, music, and celebrate being Mexican — and pozole has become one of those dishes that naturally belongs at the table.
For me, though, it’s more than just a traditional dish. It’s the smell coming from the kitchen, the big pot in the middle of the table, everyone serving themselves and adding their favorite toppings, and that feeling of being surrounded by family.
That’s one of the things I love most about Mexican food — so many of our dishes carry a little piece of our history, our traditions, and our families with them.
So tell me… what’s your Independence Day costumbre? 🇲🇽✨
