Let’s talk about the New Visa Changes!!
We love employing locals. And our first priority will always be to employ local people whenever we can. ❤️ But anyone who runs a hospitality business here in Port Douglas knows that the reality of a seasonal town is a little more complicated.

During our busy season, Port Douglas needs more staff than our local workforce can provide. That’s where backpackers and temporary visa holders have become such an important part of our community.

They come here, work hard, fill the gaps, spend money locally, explore our region and become part of the fabric of Port Douglas. Many return year after year, and some eventually choose to stay.

The proposed/new visa rules that make it harder for hospitality businesses to access this workforce could have a real impact on Port Douglas. It’s about having enough people to keep our businesses operating when demand is at its highest.

Tourism is the backbone of our town. Restaurants, cafés, hotels, tour operators, bars and shops all need extra people in the season. If businesses can’t find enough staff, the consequences don’t just affect the business owner — they flow through the entire local economy.

Seasonal workers and backpackers play such an important role in keeping Port Douglas running during the busiest times of the year The town will simply not survive without backpackers.

Port Douglas has always welcomed people from all over the world. Let’s make sure the rules don’t unintentionally make it harder for our town to welcome the workers we need.
