Mottainai, mottainai!!! This is always preached in our house. 🙂
🇯🇵 The Meaning of Mottainai
“Mottainai” (もったいない) is a Japanese expression often used when something valuable is being wasted. But behind the word is a broader idea: appreciate what you have, use it fully, and think twice before throwing it away.
That mindset can appear in simple everyday habits — turning vegetable scraps into stock, repairing an object rather than immediately replacing it, or finding reusable alternatives to disposable packaging.
The image also connects mottainai with two familiar Japanese traditions. Kintsugi gives broken pottery a new life through repair, while furoshiki cloth can be used repeatedly to wrap and carry everyday items.
At its heart, mottainai is less about having less and more about recognising the value of what is already there. 🇯🇵
