We're hoping you all had as much fun as we did on World Vegan Day!

Our little sushi spectacular was a smashing success, thanks to you, our community.

We’re so glad so many of you came out to support us and enjoy some plant-based Japanese deliciousness you don’t often find in Brisbane.

Many hours of creativity and prep went into our World Vegan Day Japanese Feast. It means the world to us to read your lovely messages and see your photos. Thank you for being part of it. 💛

Veganism’s modern movement had very humble beginnings.

In November 1944, six non-dairy vegetarians met in England and founded 'The Vegan Society'. They settled on this new word for the way they wanted to live.

Eight decades on, that idea has reached people, kitchens and communities around the world.

Here in Australia, one in 20 now follow a vegan diet, mostly 'for the animals'. And with each new generation, that number is growing.

With many prominent athletes demonstrating that a plant-based diet provides all the nutrition we need to perform at the highest levels.

And there are many who are in the public, showing that the vegan way has entered the mainstream.

The food keeps moving too. At the moment, creators like and among dozens from around the world - inspire our team with how much there is to discover with plants.

This World Vegan Day, we’re celebrating the early pioneers, the people who kept it going, and the younger generations who will take it further.

We’re marking it with a Japanese Feast at Archie, and feeling pretty happy to be a little part of the story. 💛

The mochi is pulling apart, while our Japanese Feast is coming together

The crew has been mixing, shaping and giving these little beauties a very thorough stretch test.

Soft, chewy mochi with black sesame, made together and destined for the dessert part of your Sunday.

We’re celebrating World Vegan Day this Sunday, 1 November, with nine plant-based Japanese creations for $49 per person. Drinks and desserts, including the mochi, are extra.

Sushi lovers, this is your time to get the group chat organised. 🍣 (ours is the 'yum-yum squad')

This Sunday, Chef Kya and the team are putting on a Japanese Feast at Archie Supported Employment Cafe in Carseldine.

Plant-based salmon nigiri, tempura prawn maki, little gunkan filled with tomato-watermelon ceviche and soy caviar… plus karaage, golden daikon korokke and soba noodles tossed in a sweet-savoury agave soy dressing, with spring onion, coriander, sesame and a little togarashi heat.

Nine Japanese creations for $49 per person, all plant-based, with a GF option available.

And there’s strawberry iced matcha, pistachio cold foam coffee and soft, chewy black sesame mochi to tempt you, too — available to order separately.

Archie is about friendship.

None stronger than the bond between Chefs Kya and Carlos, the two pillars of our kitchen.

Starting at Za Za Ta, Carlos has been supported by Kya to grow as a professional, building his confidence and experience - and now he shares that gift with our other workers

In fact, ask almost anyone on the team, and they’ll describe the people they work with here in the same way: as friends.

(Honestly even writing this post is getting our socials team a little teary, because we know it's not always like this in hospitality, or disability support. It's a time and place that feels special for our team)

When a workplace is built around support that comes from the heart, from care and knowing the people beside you, rather than simply getting something delicious onto a plate, it changes the feel of the whole place.

It’s a different way to run a café.

The mighty daikon. ⁠

Chef Kya is braising it, combining it with potato and nori, and turning it into korokke — Japan’s take on the croquette. Golden and crisp outside, soft in the middle, with that little savoury seaweed note.⁠
⁠
Then karaage “chicken”. Ours comes with a sticky glaze, shredded cabbage and sesame — Japanese comfort food, Archie style.⁠
⁠
And cold soba noodles, tossed in a sweet-savoury agave soy dressing with spring onion, coriander, sesame and a little togarashi heat. A fresh mouthful between all that golden crunch.⁠

Did you board the Ube Train yet?

A lot of you clearly have, because our Black Sesame & 'Purple Taro' Milk Tea has become the most popular milky drink on the menu.

Ube is the star here. It’s a yam - closely associated with Filipino cooking, especially sweets and desserts (praise ube halaya), and its flavour is a big part of the appeal: gently nutty, naturally creamy, with those soft vanilla tones coming through.

Chef Kya builds around that with black sesame, vanilla Thai milk tea, soft foam and cacao praline.

Everything is plant-based.

And for a drink that looks this dramatic, the taste doesn't disappoint.

People or food?

People.

Easy answer.

Food matters enormously to us, obviously. We spend an unreasonable amount of time talking about sauces, textures, menu ideas and whatever Chef Kya is currently experimenting with.

But Archie exists for people first.

For the people who work here. To have a workplace where they’re respected, supported, paid properly and given the chance to contribute.

And it’s not smiles and dancing every minute. Work can be tiring. Hospitality can be stressful. People have hard days.

But then you walk into the kitchen today and the team are dancing around again while getting things done.

Why people?

Because there’s not enough love on our lonely little planet.

People are mistreated, neglected, overlooked and exploited all the time. Our passion is to demonstrate, in a very practical way, just how valuable everybody is.

And we don’t think caring for people should come at the expense of animals.

So the food stays plant-based.

Food is our passion, and one of the ways we get to care for the broader community too.

People first.

Then plants on the plate.
