Fifa’s Mamelodi jets in

FIFA Southern Region development officer Ashford Mamelodi will arrive in Zimbabwe on Sunday to get an update from national association Zifa on progress in the development of a strategic and development plan when councillors meet for a retreat.

Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze said yesterday: “We are having a retreat on Saturday and Sunday that will focus on the strategic plan and development phase of football. Then Mamelodi will arrive on Sunday where he will get the document and a full briefing on progress made.”

Zimbabwe football development had suffered a blow in the last three years due to investigations into the alleged match-fixing Asiagate, Cecafa and the Central Region.

The main probe into Asiagate has been completed with life bans handed on 15 players and officials.

Other officials received 10 and five-year bans, while most of the players have to pay fines by December 31 or face various bans ranging from one to three years.

Sunday Chidzambwa, a former Warriors coach, Taurayi Mangwiro of Caps United and players Thomas Sweswe, Method Mwanjali and a journalist have appealed against their bans, thereby meeting the November 30 deadline set by Zifa.

PSL induction course for new clubs

THE Premier Soccer League (PSL) has arranged an induction course to be held in Harare this week for recently-promoted clubs ahead of the 2013 soccer season.

According to a statement from the PSL, the invited clubs are army side Black Rhinos, who won promotion into the top-flight league from the northern region, How Mine (Southern Region), Tripple B (Central Region) and Triangle from the Eastern Region.

Rhinos are not new to the league and are only making a return. On the other hand, Tripple B missed promotion to the Premiership to Hardbody last season due to a boardroom decision. How Mine are situated 30km from Bulawayo, while Triangle brings Premiership football to Chiredzi for the first time.

Each club will provide a chairperson, secretary-general, treasurer and a committee member. The induction course will be conducted by PSL chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele.

The course will run for two days and is aimed at helping newly-promoted clubs to understand the general management and administration of a club as well as rules and regulations that govern the PSL. It will tackle the registration of players ahead of the start of the new season and technical development.

The application of the laws of the game and the role of referee and match commissioner will come under discussion.

The timing of the course will help the newly-promoted clubs to get an insight into life in the top-flight league early. The 2013 PSL is expected to start at the end of February and will, like this season, include the season opening NetOne Charity Shield and the Mbada Diamonds Cup, who have confirmed their third year with the league.

Dynamos won the Charity Shield, but because of a kit wrangle between their sponsors and NetOne, did not get their $50 000 prize money. They scooped the $100 000 Mbada Diamonds Cup in addition to retaining the league title.

The third cup tournament, the BancABC Super Eight, has not yet been confirmed after it failed to take off this year. The bank had promised $15 000 each to the eight clubs that had been due to participate in the event.
