Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) held a courtesy meeting with Chililabombwe Mayor Nawa Kanengu, highlighting the continued partnership between the mining company and the local authority.

Mayor Kanengu, a former KCM employee who worked in both underground electrical operations and accounts, said KCM has made significant contributions to community development, service delivery and mining safety. He stressed the importance of continued cooperation between KCM and the council to address community needs.

KCM Chief Operating Officer Praveen Sharma reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Chililabombwe’s development, particularly in water supply, health and education. He also noted that the town is expected to benefit from continued investment on the Copperbelt.

Overall, the report emphasizes a transition from employment at KCM to civic leadership, while portraying the Mayor’s experience as an example of how investment in employees can contribute to wider community service.

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has restarted operations at its Nchanga Smelter after a US$40 million rehabilitation. The facility was shut for 106 days, longer than the planned 60 days, after inspections identified additional critical work.

KCM said the refurbishment, involving more than 1,500 workers, is intended to strengthen the smelter and secure KCM’s long-term future. The work was completed without major injuries. The Nchanga branch of the Mineworkers Union of Zambia also commended management and workers for completing the shutdown successfully.

INCASE YOU MISSED:

SUSPECTED TRUCK THIEF ARRESTED

The Zambia Police Service in Kitwe has arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with a case of Theft of Goods in Transit, following a follow-up operation conducted by Police officers and the Community Crime Prevention Unit (CCPU).

The matter was initially reported at Kitwe Central Police Station on September 10, 2026 at about 11:00 hours.

The incident occurred earlier that day at about 10:30 hours along Chibuluma Road, particularly in the Kandabwe area of Kitwe, where a truck driver, aged 35, reported that while transporting goods from Lusaka to Kasumbalesa, an unknown male climbed onto the trailer, tore the tarpaulin and allegedly stole two 25-kilogramme bags of Maq mealie meal, valued at K780.

The incident was captured on video and subsequently circulated widely on various social media platforms.

As a result of continued police patrols and heightened vigilance in the area, on September 16, 2026 at about 14:00 hours, Police officers and CCPU members received information that a man suspected to be involved in a similar offence was allegedly attempting to steal goods from another truck.

With assistance from the truck driver, the Police and CCPU officers swiftly responded and apprehended the suspect.

The suspect has been identified as Moses Musa, aged 21, of Kandabwe area in Kitwe. He is currently detained in Police custody and is expected to appear in court once investigations are concluded.

The Zambia Police Service commends members of the public, particularly truck drivers, for their cooperation in assisting law enforcement officers to prevent and detect criminal activities.

The Service further warns individuals involved in the theft of goods from trucks that Police have intensified patrols and surveillance along major transit routes and will pursue those engaged in such criminal activities.

Members of the public are encouraged to promptly report suspicious activities to the Police and to avoid confronting suspected criminals themselves, but instead alert law enforcement officers for appropriate action.
