Help us fill our Jars of Hope this Mandela Day!

The Food Evolution Research Centre (FERC) is collecting ingredients that will be used to create nutritious Jars of Hope for donation to the Hamba Bamba Funda Organisation.

We are currently collecting:
🍚 Rice
🌱 Lentils
🫛 Split peas
🍲 Soup mix
🥣 Veggie soup packets
🥫 Large coffee or mayo jars

Every donation, no matter how small, contributes to a jar that can provide nourishment, comfort, and hope to someone in need.

Yesterday, the FERC team participated in the World Hunger Day event in Diepkloof, Soweto, hosted by the City of Johannesburg Food Resilience Unit. The event highlighted the importance of sustainable eating, food security, and strengthening community food resilience for a healthier future.

World Hunger Day is a reminder that hunger is not a distant issue it exists in our communities, our cities, and across the world.

Millions of people still go to bed without enough food, while food waste continues to grow. This day calls on all of us to reflect, act, and be part of the change.

Whether it’s reducing food waste, supporting local feeding initiatives, or simply sharing awareness, every action counts.

Together, we can move from awareness to action and from scarcity to hope. 🌍

FERC, in collaboration with Soul Indigenous Life (SIL) and the Centre for Ecological Intelligence (CEI), recently engaged with Gastronomy (Nutrition 3) students in an insightful session on Indigenous crops and sustainable food systems. 🌱

The session highlighted the importance of preserving Indigenous knowledge and integrating it into modern food practices. Adding further value, Dr Kamgain, FERC’s Postdoctoral Research Fellow, delivered a guest lecture exploring the nutritional benefits of Indigenous foods and their role in promoting healthier communities.

Empowering future food leaders with knowledge that connects culture, sustainability, and nutrition.
