https://assmagic.co.za/blogs/news/hitting-the-trails-with-umko-adventure-and-go-gravel-midlands Richmond Country Club hosted their inaugural race 7 years ago with the aim of giving riders the chance to explore the beautiful Umkomaas and surrounding farm lands without having to be a serious rider. In addition we wanted to make it affordable and
feel like you were part of the Richmond Community for the weekend. We are very proud to say we have done exactly that every year and delivered something our riders would never forget. The feedback was incredibly positive and we received many Thank-You letters just like this one:
“The biggest problem with the race was the people involved. They spoilt the memories of other races and the efforts made elsewhere by doing most things better. Since when are organisers friendly, personally ask you how it’s going, feed you ice cream and lube your bike for you? The attention to detail was amazing. The food was far too good and there was way too much. I blame the organisers for eating like a pig. Four pigs actually, since it seemed that four helpings of almost everything became the norm. The chocolate cake and chicken potjie were the best of their kind I can remember. Avo is my favourite food and what a pleasure to have so much of it! You have ruined any possibilities of a diet or weight management. The route, especially day 1, was spectacular. Riding the somewhat rough tracks going down into the Umko valley was more challenging and fun than riding manicured trails. But the scenery was so spectacular that I had to stop a few times and forgot to race. The water tables were not water tables. The distractions cost me at least an hour and made me forget that we were doing a race. The first stop set the tone. The friendly helpers offered to make me coffee, and to do justice to it had to be enjoyed in relaxed fashion. The physios were great, and we did not have any queues for the (clean) toilets and (hot water) showers. I’ll be back next year; you can consider this as the first entry for next year. Hope you don’t mind, but I’ll be bringing a few friends along. Please convey our thanks to all the wonderful people that made this an incredible event to be remembered for many years.”
The Richmond Community is a very busy community and the yearly calendar includes the Farmers Challenge which hosts just under 200 entrants and the very popular Spring Classic Golf Challenge. Polo and Polocross is also very active in our community and the Richmond Country Club can comfortably handle 650 horses in their paddocks, this from 24 polo teams. All these events have grown from strength to strength each year, something we believe we can do the same with this mountain biking event. We believe we will be offering the riders a very unique riding experience and by limiting the event to 150 entrants (75 teams) they will be guaranteed an uninterrupted and free flowing ride with their buddies.
