What does a successful diversification project look like?

It is about much more than simply installing equipment.

A successful project usually starts with market research, product development, pilot trials, financial planning, branding, packaging, operator training and market launch planning.

Extrusion technology can create exciting opportunities, but long-term success depends on building a complete business around the products being manufactured.

The most successful projects combine technology, market understanding and strong ex*****on.

Technology is only one part.
Success comes from building a complete business around your products.

Maize, wheat, rice, oats, sorghum, millet and soy can become more than raw commodities.

Through extrusion, these ingredients can be transformed into convenient, nutritious and commercially valuable products for different markets.

For millers and food producers, extrusion creates opportunities to move beyond raw material supply into branded, value-added food production.

Before Investing in Equipment, Understand the Opportunity

Before buying equipment, it is important to first understand the business opportunity.

Successful projects start by looking at the market, consumer needs, product opportunities, raw materials, competition and financial viability.

Technology is important, but it should support a clear business strategy.

At CFAM, we often encourage companies to ask:

“What products can we successfully sell?”

Before asking:

“What equipment should we buy?”

Because the answer to the first question usually determines the answer to the second.

Could producing your own feed be the next step in improving your fish farm’s profitability?

For some commercial producers, bringing feed production in-house can offer greater control over cost, quality, availability and formulation. But it only makes sense when annual feed demand, raw-material supply, technical capability and plant utilisation justify the investment.

In the latest article from the CFAM African Aqua Feed Value Initiative, we look at the key questions large fish farmers should consider before investing in their own aqua feed production.

The goal is not simply to own a feed plant — it is to improve farm performance and reduce the feed cost per kilogram of fish produced.

The Most Valuable Question a Miller Can Ask

When companies think about diversification, the first question is often:

“What equipment do we need?”

But the better question may be:

“What problem are we solving?”

Consumers are looking for faster meal preparation, better nutrition, affordable food options, consistent quality and trusted brands.

When a product solves a real consumer need, the market opportunity becomes much clearer.

Successful food businesses do not start with equipment alone.
They start with understanding the customer.

Technology is then used to deliver the solution.

The most valuable investment may not always be a machine.
It may be understanding your market better.
