🇿🇦✊🏾 YOUTH DAY 2026 |

Today, we commemorate 50 years since the historic June 16, 1976 Youth Uprising - a defining moment that demonstrated the courage, resilience, and revolutionary spirit of South Africa’s youth.

As the SAYC Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality Task Team, we honour the fearless young leaders and thousands of students who stood against apartheid oppression and fought for dignity, equality, and quality education.

Fifty years later, the struggle continues. While the youth of 1976 fought for political freedom, today’s youth continue the fight against unemployment, poverty, inequality, and limited opportunities.

Their sacrifice. Our responsibility. Their legacy. Our future.

[TO THE YOUTH OF AMATHOLE DISTRICT | JUNE 16]

Fifty years ago, young people changed the course of history. They were students. They were courageous. They were the Class of 1976. Their sacrifice was not in vain. It opened doors that had been shut, broke the walls that had stood for generations, and ignited a fire that still burns today.

This Youth Month, we say to you: you are that fire’s continuation.

The Freedom Charter declared that the doors of learning and culture shall be opened to all. Those doors were opened with a price paid in blood and courage by young people who refused to accept less than their full humanity. Now those doors stand open for you. Walk through them boldly — with knowledge, with purpose, and with the same unshakeable belief in your own dignity that drove the Class of 1976.

Amathole District Municipality honours your potential. We honour your voice. We honour your future.

The Youth Parliament District Workshop for the Amathole District Municipality was held today at the Legislature’s Raymond Mhlaba Chamber, with Honourable Gunuza in attendance. The workshop provided young participants with a platform to engage on key issues affecting youth as they prepare for the upcoming Sectoral Parliament to be hosted later this month. These district workshops play a critical role in empowering delegates from across the province to actively participate in governance processes and hold public representatives accountable. This initiative supports the development of an informed, responsible, and socially conscious generation committed to advancing the Eastern Cape.
