In1979 I joined Fitzsimons Snake Park I Durban. I owned Pentax Me Super camera and knew very little about photography. Several photographers, including the likes of Bruce Aitken, visited the park to photograph snakes and I watched them carefully. Despite my very best efforts, my photographs of snakes were terrible.

I visited Etkins in Smith street, one of the better camera shops back then, and asked the salesperson to show me the best camera in the store. I was a Nikon FE. Next was a macro lens and the recommendation was a Nikon 50 mm macro. I could ill afford such expensive equipment but took the plunge.

Back at the park I shot off a few rolls of Ectachrome 64 ASA slide and my photographs we terrible.

It was a great exercise. I quickly worked out that the camera and lens have very little to do with good photography.
