Krish Govender: A Lifetime of Service to MTSS and the Tamil Community
My association with MTSS began in 1973, when my family and I lived opposite Alipore Road School. We met Sundrambal, who taught Tamil at the school, and the following year, we enrolled our children in Tamil classes.
My main reason for joining MTSS was my desire to keep Tamil language, culture and traditions alive for future generations. I believed it was important to preserve our rich heritage and ensure that our children and grandchildren would continue to embrace their Tamil identity.
My children participated in Eisteddfod training at the home of Mr A. Nadasen. Along with Mr Nadasen and Morgan, I helped transport the children to and from their homes. My involvement and commitment to supporting the children eventually led to an invitation to join MTSS.
Mr A. Nadasen and Mr M. R. Moodley approached me to become a member, as the organisation was raising funds to complete the Tamil school hall. I contributed towards this important project, and the Tamil school block was completed in 1977.
I was privileged to serve on the executive committee for 46 years before becoming chairman in 2021. Throughout this journey, I worked alongside many dedicated individuals who shared a common vision of preserving our Tamil language, culture and traditions.
I was also proud to be part of the team that introduced package weddings and helped establish the organisation’s catering services. These initiatives contributed to MTSS’s growth and strengthened its role in serving the community.
Being associated with MTSS has been a source of immense pride. Its rich history reflects the dedication, sacrifices and contributions of generations who worked tirelessly to preserve our cultural heritage.
Looking ahead, I hope MTSS will continue to grow from strength to strength, promoting Tamil language and culture while serving the community with unity and purpose. I encourage the younger generation to become actively involved, embrace their heritage and carry these traditions forward.
For me, MTSS is more than an organisation. It represents a lifelong commitment to culture, community and service, and I am honoured to have played a part in its remarkable journey.
