Capespan congratulates Jacques du Preez on his appointment as Chief Executive Officer of Hortgro, effective 1 August 2026.

Jacques has played an important role in South Africa’s deciduous fruit industry through his work in trade, market access, phytosanitary compliance, logistics and export market development. His appointment comes as the industry gathers at the Hortgro Technical Symposium 2026 in Somerset West, a timely reminder of the value of strong leadership, technical collaboration and industry-wide representation.

We wish Jacques well as he steps into this important leadership role and continues to serve the deciduous fruit sector in South Africa and internationally.

Citrus Season Update | Hoedspruit, Limpopo

Members of our citrus team recently returned from Hoedspruit in Limpopo, where they visited orchards and packhouses to follow the progress of the citrus season and oversee quality.

Star Ruby grapefruit is currently underway, with very good volumes still to be packed. Turkey Valencia oranges are also highly anticipated, as the northern citrus season continues to build momentum.

We are grateful that the weather is still holding up in the north. There is still a long season ahead, but the team is ready and excited for the weeks to come.

The recent floods and severe weather have placed significant pressure on several of South Africa’s agricultural production areas and surrounding rural communities.

Capespan extends its sincere sympathy and support to the growers, farm workers, families, businesses and communities who have experienced damage, disruption and loss during this difficult time.

Across affected regions, the impact reaches far beyond the immediate flooding. Orchards, vineyards, access roads, bridges, irrigation systems, electricity supply, cold storage, processing facilities and farming infrastructure have all come under pressure, affecting producers, workers and the broader fresh produce value chain.

We recognise the efforts of farmers, workers, local government, Eskom, Transnet, emergency teams, port and logistics stakeholders, industry bodies, local organisations and community members who are working together to restore access, support affected areas, protect product quality and keep essential agricultural supply chains moving.

Agriculture is built on resilience, but moments like these remind us that behind every orchard, packhouse and export season are people, homes, livelihoods and communities.
Recovery also requires coordinated support. Our thoughts remain with everyone affected as rebuilding continues.

A Tour, a Team and a Citrus Connection That Lasted 50 Years

In 1976, the Panthers embarked on a memorable hockey tour - a journey shaped by teamwork, fundraising, community support and a shared love for the game.
Outspan formed part of that story by sponsoring the team’s playing kit, creating a connection that has remained meaningful to the group five decades later.

This year, the Panthers came together again at Foresters Arms to celebrate the 50-year milestone of that tour and the friendships, memories and stories that have endured since then. To mark the occasion, Capespan was proud to support the reunion with Outspan shirts and citrus - a small tribute to a remarkable sporting memory.

From the original yellow tour kit to fresh white shirts and citrus shared at the reunion, Outspan remains part of a legacy rooted in sport, friendship and South African fruit.

Outspan. Still delivering after 50 years.

Where Orchard Work Meets Packhouse Quality

When the orchards give the Penhill farm team a short break from picking, they use the opportunity to see where their hard work goes next.

Picking-team leaders from Penhill Farm, together with Dawid Wandrag, Production Manager, and Kabelo Ostrich, Farm Manager, visited SRCC Hermitage Packhouse, where Penhill’s lemons are currently being packed.

The visit gave the team valuable context on how the work they do in the orchards connects directly to the packing process. It also highlighted why certain quality and marketing decisions already start in the orchard, long before the fruit reaches the packhouse.

Seeing their lemons beautifully packed in boxes brought a real sense of pride, showing the team the next step in the journey from farm to market.

Citrus Character | Midknight Valencia Orange 🍊

Midknight Valencia is a premium late-season Valencia orange variety, valued for its deep orange colour, smooth texture and exceptional sweetness. Known for its high juice content and refreshing flavour, it offers a vibrant citrus experience that appeals to both fresh fruit consumers and the juicing industry.

Compared to standard Valencia oranges, Midknight typically develops a richer colour and a sweeter, less acidic flavour profile. These qualities, combined with its excellent post-harvest performance and extended shelf life, make it particularly well suited for international export markets.

In South Africa, Midknight Valencia oranges are generally harvested from July through September, helping to extend the availability of sweet oranges toward the end of the citrus season. With its abundant juice and balanced flavour, it remains a favourite for both fresh eating and juice production.

Sweet, juicy and full of sunshine.

Citrus Character: Java Shaddock Pummelo 🍊

Java Shaddock is one of the largest citrus varieties, recognised for its thick rind and generously sized segments. With a milder profile than grapefruit, it offers a gently sweet flavour with low acidity, making it a refreshing and approachable citrus option.

Its firm, juicy flesh delivers a clean eating experience, while the thick rind adds versatility for further use in preserves and culinary applications. Less sharp than grapefruit but still distinctly citrus, it occupies a unique position within the citrus category.

In South Africa, Java Shaddock pummelos are typically harvested from March through June, forming part of the early citrus window. Their size, shelf life and balanced flavour profile make them well suited for both fresh markets and export programmes.

Distinct in size, subtle in flavour - a citrus with presence.

Citrus Season Update | Groot Patrysvlei, Clanwilliam

On 26 March 2026, our citrus team visited Groot Patrysvlei, a Capespan-owned citrus farm in the Clanwilliam region.

Together with Production Manager Ruan Matthews, the team viewed orchard progress across a range of citrus varieties, with fruit at different stages as the region moves closer to harvest. Harvest is expected to commence in approximately two weeks. The photos captured during the visit reflect how the season is shaping up on the ground, showing steady development across blocks.

Groot Patrysvlei’s location, higher up in the hills, provides a natural advantage, with its Clementines typically harvested around two weeks earlier than surrounding Citrusdal farms. This early window creates valuable opportunities in key markets such as the USA and Europe.

We are excited for the Western Cape citrus harvest to commence, as the 2026 season begins to take shape.
