A son of Cypriot immigrants, Michael Elias was exposed to authentic Greek and Cypriot cuisine throughout his life. With Mama no longer living in Cape Town, Michael wanted to recreate and share the memories of his childhood feasts with seekers of authentic Greek and Mediterranean cuisine in Cape Town. What started as a family-run business with Michael Elias, his father Papou Aleko (90+ years old at

the time) and sister Helen, working together to recreate the best deli-style dishes for the cosmopolitan Cape Town community and international visitors alike. Now it has become a fully functioning Mediterranean restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, meze deli, fully licenced bar while retaining that cosy, friendly coffee shop vibe.

Founded by Michael Elias and his father, affectionately known as “Pappou”, Caffe Neo was born out of the tradition of the Greek Coffee House or “Kafenion” – a meeting place for connection and conversation.

The cafe is a hub for families, travellers, entrepreneurs, remote workers and journalists - and all their furry friends.

With our spectacular view and location on Cape Town’s promenade, we offer:

Dolma – named after the Turkish verb dolmak, meaning “to fill” or “to stuff” – refers to a broad family of dishes in which rice, meat, vegetables and spices are wrapped in pre-cooked leaves or stuffed into hollowed fruits and vegetables, and then baked, cooked or served as is. The concept is believed to have originated in the 15th-Century kitchens of the Ottoman Empire...

Under centuries of Ottoman rule, dolma spread across imperial territories, finding new homes in the Mediterranean, the Caucasus, the Balkans and the Middle East. As communities adapted it to local tastes and ingredients, it took on new names and new identities.”
